"Visiting Vietnam without listening to a rhythm of ca tru traditional music means that you've not discovered the real spirit of Vietnam yet."

"Free yourself and get immersed in ca tru while enjoying performance by Thang Long Ca Tru Theatre. It is a voluntary, non-profit group of ca tru musicians founded in 2006. Long-time history, unique instruments, impressive music tones and meaningful song lyrics made ca tru recognized by UNESCO as the World Intangible Cutural Heritage."

"This is a concert for about 70 persons held in an old temple in the old quarter of Hanoi. They are good about explaining the instruments and the history of the music. They even let you come try out the instruments. The hot tea and little cake is a nice touch at intermission"

"The singers had such dear, expressive faces and sang with such intensity. The instruments were unique and had a real otherworldly quality to them and the presentation and overall performance were of a very high quality. I felt delighted, entertained and educated. Well worth going to see."-Visited wrote

The show is on every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday night at 6pm and 8pm, Friday and Sunday night at 8pm at 28 Hang Buom (Quan De Temple).

This was a highlight of our trip to Hanoi. The water puppet show is charming, but this intimate and sincere musical performance touched my heart deeply. The space also adds ambiance to a night of rare, traditional Ca Tru music. The ever morphing ensemble explained the instrumentation they were using, and the tradition of Ca Tru which includes a little... More

I went there expecting great things considering the reviews here. I came back sorely disappointed and wanting my money back. Yeah, sure, the music and period costumes are authentic, but it is seriously boring. They play the exact same music many times over, only switching the singer, who sings in a not-so-good way (i.e, boring and monotone), in my opinion... More

My wife and I attended a Saturday night performance at the old theater/temple on Hang Buom Street, and it was absolutely delightful and educational. Music is the universal language...so even though you do not speak Vietnamese you can certainly feel the vibe of these folks through all kinds of musical expression and especially Ca Tru. The overall feel of the... More

This is one of those opportunities that you can enjoy a world class performance for ridiculously cheap price. These artists who are protecting and re-developing this unique and beautiful form of Vietnamese traditional art performee with pride and skill. Improvisasion and interplay between string instrument and vocal almost seems like those oj jazz. The harmony of deep string sound and... More

We were walking along Pho Ma May in Hanoi's Old Quarter the other night and were given a brochure about a ca tru musical performance. Knowing nothing about ca tru we decided nonetheless to spend $US10 each and attend. And what a lovely experience it was. An hour of fascinating music, audience interaction and wonderful performances by the lovely Ca... More

1000 years old historical architecture (temple) as a stage, in the midth of busy bustling night street of bars and crowd, here we witnesses the beauty of "Ca Tru" -- traditional Northern Vietnam music performance which even some Vietnamese people don't know much about. This is an oasis of Hanoi, if you also appreciate the dedicated musicians & singers, and... More

It's a must visit place. Water puppet theatre is nice but too commercial so if you after unique, traditional, cultural experience, there is no better choice in Hanoi.

When visit Hanoi, beside food tourism, Ca Tru is one of strange thing that you should try. The theater is located inside the pedestrian streets within Old Quarter, easy to find. This kind of ancient music is unique that you can't find in other country, even in southeastern Asia. During the performance, they introduce the instruments and invite you to... More

Lovely location despite the braying of the Ruperts and Camillas outside on their gap yahs. But. What makes it is how deadly serious in intent the performers are and how much they mean it, if that makes sense. Unusual evening and a good one.
