Because of their precipitous nature, most of the islands are uninhabited and unaffected by a human presence. The site's outstanding scenic beauty is complemented by its great biological interest. The outstanding value of the property is centered around the drowned limestone karst landforms, displaying spectacular pillars with a variety of coastal erosional features such as arches and caves which form a majestic natural scenery. The repeated regression and transgression of the sea on the limestone karst over geological time has produced a mature landscape of clusters of conical peaks and isolated towers which were modified by sea invasion, adding an extra elemant to the process of lateral undercutting of the limstone towers and islands. « less

I visited Ha Long Bay and hired a boat and crew for a leisurely 6 hour cruise around the bay. We stopped and bought fresh fish which was cooked for us on the boat. We also stopped at different islands along the way for sightseeing and swimming. Back then this cost about $40 AUD.

The view is good, not great. Nothing worth the 8-hour round trip drive from and to the city(day trip Alova tour). The junks are quite tiny and food is nothing special either. Plus the bay water is dirty, no one would surely want to fall out of their kayaks. Beaches/islands in the Philippines are far more worth to visit with... More

Beautiful place to visit. Though not possible to see all islands in a short trip, visiting a few was quite interesting. Trips include visiting caves, island picnicking, climbing. Do climb up 400 steps to the view-point to watch the beautiful sunset. Do check the weather forecast before going as some weather conditions will prevent boats from going out to the... More

Cheap way to see Halong Bay is by going down to the government pier and buy your tour ticket. You have an option of purchasing a 1 day to 3 days boat trip pass (not on Junk boat). I bought a 1 day pass and it included a cave and a canoe ride. for around 20 usd.

Yes you need to allow some days to included the visit Halong Bay. Ha long Bay's a huge and beautiful bay with calm waters ideal for cruising in but it was a sight for sore eyes as we saw loads of rubbish such as plastic bottles, damaged Styrofoam pieces and other non-degradable plastic stuff and bags floating almost everywhere for... I found Ha Long Bay to be breathtaking. I took a one man day cruise (I was travelling solo) and hired a boat and two crew for the day, as this had to be done. I was worth every penny! The tranquillity, the beauty was awesome. I aim to go back, but next time not solo.

We agonised over whether to add in a Ha Long Bay overnight trip to our 10 day Vietnam adventure. In the end, after much consultation with friends who had been, travel agents, and Trip Advisor, we decided to make the effort. We wished we hadn't. Basically, Ha Long Bay is a stunning place, but tight government controls (and perhaps tour... More

The Halong Bay area has some of the most stunning scenery I've ever seen. However, it also has some of the worst pollution I've ever seen. The water is dying and you can see it in the amount of trash, plastic bags and bottles which float by. The boat we stayed on was comfortable, the food was incredible and the hut... More

Halong Bay is beautiful and worth the trip. The cave we visited was great. However, choose carefully which tour company you use. Our hotel booked us on a day tour with APT Travel. Do not use them. The tour guide we had on the bus was awful and the lunch provided on the boat was disgusting.
