One of Bangkok’s best-kept secrets is Khlong Toey, a chaotic, sprawling food market not far from the city’s centre. It’s a travel photographer’s dream, packed with shouting market vendors offering live produce, fresh fruit and vegetables and cooked local dishes. Eye-opening and enthralling, it’s a great insight into how locals live – and to where your moo manow really comes from.

If you like food, I mean food as a source not as a finished product then this is a must. The place teems with life, colour, energy and smells. Its vital, lively and demands your full attention. Its better and more real than Hollywood. You may see some rats, but then you're as likely to see them on Sukhumvit. We... More

I love going to local markets, as you get a real sense of the food and how local people live. This place was fantastic, as the sights and smells were exactly what I was looking for. My mission was to buy fresh curry pastes and shrimp paste to take home and I was not disappointed. The highlight was seeing bowls... More

Traditional wet market of the East. The usual poultry, meat, fish, fruits and vegetable sections plus insect section which is particular exciting. Great deal everywhere, goods are fresh and prices about 25% of what you get at supermarket. Dress appropriately... Rainboots or sneakers, prepare to get your feet wet (and dirty) wearing slippers as you walk through fish and seafood... More

Not far from the business district of Sathon you find this market - almost a small town in itself. Here they sell anything from gearboxes to crayfish. Great place.

A great large and local wet market, where all the produce is fresh, fresh, fresh ( some of it so fresh, it's still living)! The market can be reached easily from the nearby Khlong Toey MRT station which is only a few 100 metres away. If you can, wear "no slip" shoes as the aisles are very wet with melting... More

Most 'Local' feeling place I visited in Bangkok. Got there at 6:30am and got to see everything. If you have a weak stomach, this probably isn't for you. If you don't Top choice to make sure you hit up when in town.

Anything from fresh fish, vegetables, cooking accessories and many others can be found here. Within easy reach by MTR to Queen Sirikit National Convention Center and a 3m walk to the next junction, The market is on all 4 corners of the junction. We did not see any tourists. Works 24h a day.

If you want to see how Bangkok's southeastern denizens shop for groceries, this is the place to go. This was the 4th market I toured while in SE Asia, and it was by far the largest. It is impressive both in its sprawl and by the number of people bustling around, negotiating prices and buying fresh ingredients. Everything you need... More
