Thamel is a must visit place in Kathmandu. We spent four days here and enjoyed every minute. Shopping is good, we bought adventure gear plus had eye tests and three pair of glasses made overnight. Good quality and good prices. Lots of restaurants and not too many touts. Just find a land mark because there are lots of roads and...

The best part of thamel was leaving. I am horrible at haggling. If you are good at it, this might be your place. The faster you can get out of Thamel the better in my opinion. The people I met that stayed in the outskirts or near the buddha stupa said it was nicer than thamel. My next visit will...

Went there one night with my girlfriend and was unimpressed. A bunch of dirty bars, and kids trying to con you into giving them money. During the day, there were some cool shops, but I would rather spend time in my hotel room relaxing after being out all day rather than the nightlife here.

Caveat! Set your price...

A good area for restaurants, souvenirs, travel agencies and stuff. But that's about all. So go and see the valley and spend you're night at this place.

This is the place to shop. From souvenirs to trekking gear to painting etc. However always remember to bargain/negotiate. Look to knock off atleast 40-50% of the prices in this area. Happy shopping!

Thamel is a business district of KTM where all the tourists are.
If you need a quiet district, don't go there, choose a small guest house close to Bodnath (for example)

It's a great place to people watch, shop, eat, etc., Great central location, lovely locals willing to help, and some nice, inexpensive hotels. It's a must-visit when in Kathmandu.
