The temple is a little hard to find but by asking around or using a guidebook one should stumble upon it easily enough. The entrance is usually flanked by two women selling postcards.
Tourists are only allowed into the central courtyard and pictures are not permitted whatsoever, don't even try.

Went to the Kumari Chowk 02.03.2012, Durbar Square nearby was really busy in the afternoon, this place appeared much quieter. Easily missed if u are not familiar with the place or if u dun come with a local guide. There are a few old ladies sitting by the entrance of the building, selling postcards of the Kumari. Mind your head...

Was amazing to see a piece of nepalese culture that is so unique. BUt it is slightly sad to think of what the poor girl must feel like, cooped up like a show pony.
Remember you can not take photos of the Kumari!

The fascination of seeing a living goddess is the reason to go to this great little temple in the middle of Durbar Square. Don't be dissapointed if she does not show up... From 7-8 visits I only witnessed her presence at the upper window only twice. Sometimes asking the guard nicely, and visibly putting 500 rupees in the donation box...

Learn about the Kumari before you go - it will make seeing the Kumari Chowk so much more meaningful! The current Kumari did make an appearance while we were in the courtyard - absolutely awesome to see her!

Me and my friend were really lucky in seeing the royal kumari come out for like 15 seconds. We were together with a large Chinese tour group and the guide convinced the kumari to come out. They are very strict about photographs so we couldn't get a photo. I read somewhere that seeing the royal kumari brings you luck so...
