This Chorten (or buddhist stupa) is a revered monument in Thimphu as evidenced by the number of local Bhutanese paying their respects. Situated in the middle of the town, it is a nice place to take a break, specially if you have spent some time walking around the main street - Norzin Lam.

Although this site is not as impressive or structually grand as other Dzongs such as Tiger's nest and Punakha Dzong, this site is the best place to experience the daily Buddhism as practiced by the Bhutanese people. The National Memorial Chorten was commissioned by the queen and built in 1974 to honor the third king Jigme Dorji Wangchuck who died in Kenya where he went for a treatment.
