A fabulous hike, quite tough if you aren't acclimatised or used to hiking but bearable if you are. Five hundred steps take you down into the outer crater, a trail of white dots lead you across the inner caldera and the up and around the cone for what seems like forever. It is worth getting up early to get to... More

Very spectacular views, moon landscapes, but the crater was in the clouds the day we visited. So you must be lucky sometimes. The week after our visit there was an eruption!! Must do when you go to Reunion.

Prepare for a longish drive from St Denis (+-1hr). The lunar landscape, spectacular cliffs and solidified lava flows will take your breath away. There is a little coffee shop providing sandwiches and drinks. If you plan on walking make sure you have decent shoes as the rocks formed from lava can be very sharp. Also take sun protection and a... More

Great views of the island has you drive up to the volcano, and lovely places to stop and take good pictures. The lunar landscape of this place is truly something to see - be careful of weather changes, they can happen really quickly without warning.

No entrance fee. Took us about 6 hours, but we spent a lot of time messing around with rocks and stuff. At one point we were even pretending to kayak in gaps in the rock, so I'm sure you could complete it in less time. We actually got a super late start, arrived at 12:30 pm. This meant a few... More

Although the volcano is currently erupting and the normal hike to the edge of the crater has been closed, it is still well worthwhile to visit. The roundtrip hike to the viewpoint is about 9 miles and follows the edge of the caldera. It is fairly flat and not particularly difficult. You don't get a close up view of the... More

Visited on a Sunday afternoon and was VERY busy with other couples, family outings , but luckily we were in no rush and happy to walk to see the volcanic eruption. We have seen the magma, with the central vulcano eruption. We were rendered speechless. Just wow !

Leave early, so you get to the crater before the clouds roll in. We stayed at the gîte, so left around 7:00, got there on time. Well worth the walk, but found the Etna in Sicily and Mt Batur in Bali more impressive.

We drove to Pas de Bellecombe at dusk. Along the way you can admire beautiful panorama on different parts of the island. Part of the road closer to final parking place is in terrible condition (plenty of big holes) so drive carefully. Crater and the area it's located in are amazing - you can admire different lava formations. Trek to... More

We are staying on Mauritius but planned a day trip to Reunion just for a taste. If you have the time, taking the full hike is ideal. But even if you haven't the time or inclination for a full day's hike, in an hour and a half, you can reach the base of the lava flows and have an appreciation... More
