they are trying, but it is a zoo in a developing world capital city so dont go with high expectations. A pleasant way to spend an afternoon until you get to the Fossa enclosure and see the miserable cats, but likely this is the only way you will see them!! More

By western standards some of the cages are a bit small but the zoo is definitely improving (we visited in 2004) and there are some interesting exhibits, including the breeding aye aye. Worth supporting this well intentioned zoo. More

I was prepared for seeing poor conditions at this zoo but was pleasantly surprised by the gardens and enclosures in the zoo grounds.
