This is a low key attraction with a decidedly southeast asian feel to the buildings, complemented with some late 19th century influence. The long historical connection with the Kings and Queens of the Merina people, and Madagascar, can be felt. There are splendid trees in the grounds surrounding modest royal buildings. You can enter some of them and so understand... More

This is a fantastic historical site and, because most of our trip of Madagascar was focussed on wildlife, gave us a marvellous diversion at the end of the holiday. The place was swarming with Malagasy school children. In the UK I would have been horrified at this but the children were very well behaved (if somewhat noisy at times) and... More

we didn't go around so much as you had to get a tour guide to go inside plus we didn't want to pay the fees. plus when we saw the people on tour who just exited, we saw their bored, underwhelmed faces. More

I got a guide/driver through a local friend. The drive to Ambohimanga takes anything from 30 to 60 minutes depending on the traffic. It is however a good way to see the northern outskirts of Tana at the same time. The palace and the surroundings are well maintained and the local guides spoke good English and had a lot of... More

This World Heritage Site is interesting in itself - see the vast stone that was rolled across the gateway every night - with fantastic views right across to Tana 20k away. More

As I had enough of Tana I decided this place... its a nice drive through the country, a nice escape from the poluted Tana. The palace, is in a relatively good state and there are enough items and stories to be told, a guide is recommended; to keep you occupied for a while. Dont expect to find any items that... More

Definitely hire a guide! The stories and the insights are what make this such an interesting visit. I've been twice now and keep hearing and learning new things. There is also a lovely little restaurant just a 2 minute walk from the base of the stairs - Chez Haga. Outside patio dining with French and Malagasy menu and perfect green... More

This was a great spot to visit. We had one day left in Tana and chose this over the Rova and the PM's palaces, and had no regrets. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is culturally significant and informative. After we came in, we had our own guide who spoke excellent English and was very knowledgeable and friendly. She... More

An easy and pleasant trip out of the crowded capital city, Antananarivo, Ambohimanga is a lovely day or half day trip and a great introduction to Malagasy history and culture. Informal local guides speak English; the women are the best re knowing their history and culture and not trying to sell stuff or tell you what you want to hear.... More
