The same is true of all Art Deco buildings in Asmara. A lack of care and preservation has them in decline. A pity.

word on the street is that no-one trusted the architect as the canopy, mimicking the wings of an aeroplane, seemed to defy both logic and engineering! At the official opening of the station there was reluctance, from the mayor downwards, to remove the supporting timbers. Rumour has it that when the supports from the wings where to be removed no-one would do it so the designers did it alone. The building still stands today!!!

In 1953 I lived down one block from Fiat Tagliero. Back then it was a working gas station. Behind it there was an Ice Block Factory owned by Italians. An Italian school, Collegio La Salle was down the street. In front and across the street from Fiat Tagliero was a large speaker on a post, that was the public radio.... More

Must see for architects. Walking distance from city centre. An old service station, which is no longer in use, but its design lives on.
