I had only read about the Bardo in my guide and hadn't seen any photos so I didn't know what to expect.. on my way there with a taxi (cost about €3 from Ave. Bourguiba with mild traffic) the driver told me "it's the second biggest museum in the world".... sure ahahaha maybe he meant the second biggest collection of... more

Bardo Museum is said to be the biggest and the richest mosaic museum of the world and it's really very impressive. At least a half day must be devoted to its visit. Not only mosaics but also Roman and Grec sculptures are also displayed. The building itself is also very impressive, the palace of a Turkish official from the Ottoman... more

This museum is probably not up to most Westerners' standards, but for Tunisia it is probably as good as it gets. The mosaics span a lot of subjects and are not all pristine but still incredible. Some of the interior architecture is lovely too and we enjoyed our visit at the Bardo more than anything else we saw in Tunis. more

Everything you have read about the Roman mosaics is true! They are amazing, wonderfully preserved, lively, interesting, and artistic. The museum itself is a fine building, with many rooms that are very beautiful, regardless of the contents. The remains from the Roman ship that sank in a storm carrying a family's entire materials for a new villa are very interesting... more

As others have said, this museum does seem to have the best collection of Roman mosaics. Besides the mosaics, there are sculptures and a display of traditional furnishings. The museum is a nice size and it is easy to find a taxi in the street or using the taxi phone near the entrance. more

I have been coming to Tunisia for the past 20 years. Nowhere in the world have I seen such an excellent collection of Mediterranean history through mosaics as I do each time I visit the Bardo. I was there on the 15th of this month late morning, away from the hustle and bustle of too many camera-happy tourists. The place... more

Having spent a month in Tunisia during which we visited a large proportion of the Roman ruin sites across the country we were really looking forward to visiting the museum in our last few days. Especially as at every roman site that we visited we read or were told that the best finds or mosaics had been removed and taken... more

There are statues, mosaics, columns etc from all over the country in this museum. With the exception of a small area where proistoric findings are excibited in a kitch jurasic park like style, this museum is brilliant! There are things found in Carthage, Dougga, El Jem and various other areas, from Pheniean, Roman, Vyzantine and other eras. Also, there are... more

The Bardo Museum has the best samples of Roman tile mosaics. Spread out over 3 floors in a former Byzantine style palace, the mosaics cover entire rooms. The detail in the mosaics is outstanding and in some cases very realistic. There are also many statues and other artifacts from Punic and Roman eras. There is section committed to Arabic art... more
