I visited this amphitheatre first in 2010 with my girlfriend and when we returned in 2012 with friends we were happy to return again as it is quite magnificent. Having never been to see Rome's Colosseum I cannot personally compare them, however my girlfriend has and she reckons that this is better as it has the entire floor for a... More

Sadly Tunisia is still suffering from bad press after the uprisings last year. It did however mean that our visit was not hindered by hordes of others. The amphitheatre, which is still extensively intact is awe-inspiring. Having read beforehand about the activities there it was all the more impressive. The main attraction is the arena and the surrounding seating -... More

El Djem is famous for its amphitheatre (often incorrectly called "a coliseum"), capable of seating 35,000 spectators. Only Rome's Colosseum (about 45,000 spectators) and the ruined theatre of Capua are larger. Built by the Romans and a truly magnificent sight. This trip was done as day trip as part of a all day excurtion. It was truly magnificent and awesome.... More

One of the highlights of my trip to Tunisia. Really well presented & barely any tourists. Not as big as the colosseum in Rome, but certainly worth a visit. More

We visited El Jem as part of our Sahara Explorer trip while holidaying in Hammamet. First impression of this large amphitheatre (after fighting through the hoard of annoying street sellers) is "wow", and you'll quickly find yourself taking a tonne of photos. However, once your photo taking is over and you start walking around, you quickly realise that there is... More

We completed the two day Simply Sahara trip which was absolutely fantastic. On the first day you rise very early for the first stop at ElDjm a gigantic Roman amphitheatre which is really amazing and takes you back in time, we then travelled onto Matmata to see the Cave Houses which people still actually live in and show you round... This is apparently the best preserved amphitheatre in the world. It isn't quite as big as the one in Rome which I've also visited, however, it is pretty amazing. It is oval rather than circular. There is freedom to roam about all of it, including the rulers viewing areas and the cells below. Some parts of the film Gladiator were... More

If you like ancient ruins this one is not to be missed. It is the 4th largest coliseum outside of Rome and has as much preserved as the one in Rome, including some of the underground passages and much of the outside walls. Unspoilt by the usual visitor centres you get in UK and Europe , it didnt even have... More
