After arriving at the scheduled reporting time and waiting five hours, I finally was able to discover that the train to Zambia was delayed 22 hours, and would no longer have first class sleeper cars due to a technical problem. Despite my hopes to see Tanzania by train, such a delay would severely limit my time in Victoria Falls before... More

We took the Tuesday (express) 2 day train from Kapiri Mposhi to Dar es Salaam. We had paid for the (4 seated) first class cabin and would recommend doing so if you can afford it as it's long time to spend with 6 people in a confined space. That's the only difference between first and second class. The experience itself... More

Although we tried to book a place on the Tazara three weeks in advance by e-mail and telephone (numbers and addresses advertised on their website!) we did not get one single helpful response! We ended up in Mbeya on monday and found out at the train station that they only sell the tickets on the day of departure. We could... More

Train from Dar es Salaam to Mbeya. We were planning on leaving on a Tuesday so we arrived on a Monday to get tickets but found that they were already sold out. So we bought tickets for the following Friday. (Since it leaves twice a week) We got advised by other travelers to go first class because 2nd class here... More

I took the train with my friend from Dar es Salaam to Mbeya, where we caught a bus into Malawi. The train is definitely something everyone should try once! It's dirty, noisy, hot, and exactly the kind of exhilarating travel experience that you'll remember for the rest of your life. The main piece of advice I have is to be... More

Travelled in early July 2014. Booked a full compartment between two of us for privacy and security. Knew to expect basic levels, but was surprised at how run-down the train was. It was actually fairly filthy. Chatting to people we found out that the staff just don't get time to fully clean the trains, so the cleaning is just basic.... More

The train is a great example of these countries. We took it round trip from Kapiri Mposhi to Dar es Salaam. As other reviewers have said, it won't be on time. The first trip departed 2 hours late and took a full 72 hours. The second trip was in just under 60 hours. We took the ordinary train both times,... More

Ok so my friend and I who I'm backpacking with were recommended to take this. We got to Mbeya on Monday. Firstly, Mbeya is not a very nice place and there is hardly any proper supermarkets around to buy food. We went to the station to buy our first or second class tickets. They told us sold out. We said... More

We (9 of us) took the TAZARA from Zambia to Dar es Salaam early November 2013. We arrived early to the train station to make sure we got our first class tickets. (if you can afford it get first class, 2nd class at a pinch and take a bus if you can only afford 3rd class). Bathrooms at the Station... More

Your experience on the Tazara train will take into account three main factors 1. Expectations 2. Ticket type 3. Delays We travelled on the train twice in the month of September 2013. The first journey was taken in Super Seater class from Mbaya to Dar Es Salaam; the second in First Class from Dar Es Salaam to Kapiri Mposhi in... More
