Visit Sterkfontein Caves to really understand this! Yes, it is the study of and search for the fossil record of early humans and our ape like ancestors. Sterkfontein is one of the world's most significant sites for this as well as the bones of many other extinct creatures. The unusual geology of this area allows for the preservation of large... More

I am not really a person for local tourist attractions as the "African theme" is kinda worn out, though this place blew my mind. The tour guide was very knowledgable and presented himself in an impeccable manner. This tour is not for people with claustrophobia, as you go about 60 meters underground through narrow tunnels. DONT MISS THIS!! More

To find the start of the Sterkfontein cave that you can actually go down and visit wasn't easy as there are many caves in the area and the sign posting wasn't great. So we pulled up at a lodge and asked, and we were one of many asking the security guard the same question. We bought tickets to go down... More

Worthwhile visiting if you're interested in paleontology, natural history, etc. Get a combo ticket and visit Maropeng (about 5km away). More

We met at the reception of the caves, and I was pleasantly surprised at the visitor's centre with its clean lines and modern looks. The setting is really peaceful although not too far from the city. We were led through the caves by the personable guide Reuben, who was passionate about the tour and enjoyed telling us the stories about... More

Combined attraction tickets to Maropeng Centre and Sterkfontein are available for purchased for R190. It is located about 1 hours drive from either Jo'burg or Pretoria. Visit to the cave includes a guided tour into the cave. The waiting area for the tour has an exhibit of the theory of evolution which was well put together. Good shoes for a... More

This is a site to be missed. The above reviews discuss the area as a whole and not the Cave specifically; a visit to the Maropeng Center can and should be done without a visit to this Cave. The Cave itself really has little to offer. A visit to the cave is a somewhat lengthy walk in and out of... More

The cave itself is not so beautiful but it is full of history, and the museum is located west of Joburg in a very nice countryside. Close to the cave is the Maropeng museum, with an excelent restaurant. Go to the cave with children, they'll find it very funny, as they'll need to crawl in certains parts of the path... More

We went to the Sterkfontein Caves last weekend (as well as the Maropeng Visitor Center.) The caves were not nearly as grand as other caves we've visited, but they did provide a nice opportunity to do a short underground hike. Note that the caves can be quite slippery inside, and require visitors to descend nearly 200 steps (and then to... More

As a visitor from US, I went to Maropeng and Sterkfontein with little idea of what I was going to see. This is the only place in the world, that I know of, where you can see early hominid fossils and also understand and experience how they lived an died. The caves are spectacular limestone formations, but the unique thing... More
