Description: The Nuuanu Pali State Wayside is a lookout above the Pali Highway tunnels...
The Nuuanu Pali State Wayside is a lookout above the Pali Highway tunnels where you’re treated to a panoramic view of Oahu's Windward side with sweeping views of Kaneohe, Kaneohe Bay and Kailua. It’s also well known for strong tradewinds, forming a natural wind tunnel of sorts. It was here in 1795 that Kamehameha The Great conquered the island of Oahu in one of the bloodiest battles in Hawaiian history. Led by Kalanikupule, the defenders of Oahu were driven back up into the valley where they were trapped above the cliff. More than 400 of Kalanikupule's soldiers were driven off the edge of the cliff to their deaths 1,000 feet below.

The Pali Lookout is the sight of King Kamehameha's victory over Oahu's defending warriors thus uniting the Hawaiian Islands. The Koolau Mountains seen here were once part of an active volcano. Millenia ago its northern slopes disappeared into the Pacific Ocean after a catastrophic landslide. It is the most popular viewpoint of the island's windward side.

What a natural phenomena! The winds blowing over the cliff are amazing. Up close and personal views of the cliffs. Pose for pictures against the lush green foilage or the wind blown roots of trees. Walk along the edge of the cliff.

A beautiful panoramic view of the Oahu north coast. When I say "Don't miss this" I mean it literally. The exit off of the Pali Highway is not easy to see. You can exit from either direction. From Honolulu if you get to the tunnel you have gone too far. From the north coast slow down as you exit the... More

This is worth the drive. The Pali lookout is like nothing you've ever experienced. Walk to the edge and see the unbelievable view and learn about the ancient Hawaiian battle that took place there. The wind blows unbelievably strong and at the lower level of the lookout, on the right, when the wind gusts, you feel as if you are... More

Nice place to see, the wind was enough to toss you around and fairly cool as well. It's a few dollars to park, we didn't want to stay more than about 20 minutes, it's worth taking a look. Lot's of chickens walking about.

Great panoramic view, with lots of historical significance. There is also a hike you can start from here. Down side for me was they charge to park here to view the look-out, or hike and they had 3 people monitoring the parking lot. You can see the same thing just driving, but you don't get to read the historical significance... More

What a beautiful spot! Take a jacket, as it's cooler up there and there are strong winds, but it is well worth the trip to get here. My husband and I enjoyed our time here and will enjoy our pictures for years to come!

Senic view of Kaneohe Bay. Provides nice photo ops. Free, but fee for parking for non-residents. Usually very windy so secure your hats!

Cut into a mid island high way cutting rite across Oahu and over the tops of the ancient volcanoes is the Pali highway. You go threw at least 2 tunnels rite threw the heart of an extinct volcano and at one point you are afforded the opportunity to park off the road at Pali look out which is a scenic... More

Breath taking panoramic views. We were on the beach 15 minutes before heading up the mountain road into a rainstorm. Don't let the weather detour you. It changes within minutes. The road into the park is lush & has amazing rainforest lined trees & vines. Fortunately the rain stopped as we parked. There is a self paid parking area $3. It... More
