Description: The Nuuanu Pali State Wayside is a lookout above the Pali Highway tunnels...
The Nuuanu Pali State Wayside is a lookout above the Pali Highway tunnels where you’re treated to a panoramic view of Oahu's Windward side with sweeping views of Kaneohe, Kaneohe Bay and Kailua. It’s also well known for strong tradewinds, forming a natural wind tunnel of sorts. It was here in 1795 that Kamehameha The Great conquered the island of Oahu in one of the bloodiest battles in Hawaiian history. Led by Kalanikupule, the defenders of Oahu were driven back up into the valley where they were trapped above the cliff. More than 400 of Kalanikupule's soldiers were driven off the edge of the cliff to their deaths 1,000 feet below.

Some say that the breath of the Hawaiian War God Kuka-ili-mo ku surges up the cliff face at Pali Lookout to buoy up the Hawaiian Warriors fighting for O'ahu's independence against the unifying efforts of Kamehameha I. They lost this battle here, being forced over the cliffs, some of them jumping! Hawaii became One Nation here in this final battle.... More

Gorgeous view from the lookout. Scenic drive up to the lookout, shame it's almost not possible to stop for a photograph. Limited parking at the lookout but you don't have to wait long for a parking space. Information about the history of the place is provided on site.

If you are driving across Oahu, try taking the Pali Highway instead of the H3. It's almost as quick and you can stop at this beautiful lookout. The lookout offers great views of the valley below, as well as Kane'ohe Bay. It is usually pretty windy up there so hang on to your hat!

Fun little outing, neat to read the historical significance of the site. Be prepared to pay a little for parking.

The Pali Lookout is well worth the drive thru the middle of Oahu. The view is outstanding and if your lucky as we were on your way out you can see a Waterfall off the in distance across from the exit. The view with the magnificent blue water with the gorgeous green mountain views is just unbeatable. Even the drive... More

This is a short drive up from Honolulu and is certainly worth your time to visit. The Pali Highway cuts through the island from Honolulu and takes you right into Kailua. About a 3rd of the way, you'll see signs for the Pali Lookout. The one issue I have with this attraction is that parking is pretty limited. Because you... More

This is such a neat place. Its high up on a mountain on the windward edge of the Island. The winds blow in off the Pacific and straight up this cliff so hard you can lean in to it. You can't wear a hat or anything that can be blown off. Be careful of your glassed. It is so weird... More

This is one of the places to check out especially if you want a view of the island. Expect it to be extremely windy especially since you're pretty high up there. Views are great which means excellent selfies and/or group pictures.
