Description: The Nuuanu Pali State Wayside is a lookout above the Pali Highway tunnels...
The Nuuanu Pali State Wayside is a lookout above the Pali Highway tunnels where you’re treated to a panoramic view of Oahu's Windward side with sweeping views of Kaneohe, Kaneohe Bay and Kailua. It’s also well known for strong tradewinds, forming a natural wind tunnel of sorts. It was here in 1795 that Kamehameha The Great conquered the island of Oahu in one of the bloodiest battles in Hawaiian history. Led by Kalanikupule, the defenders of Oahu were driven back up into the valley where they were trapped above the cliff. More than 400 of Kalanikupule's soldiers were driven off the edge of the cliff to their deaths 1,000 feet below.

Our Hawaiian friends were showing us the sights around Honolulu and Pali Lookout was one of our many stops during the morning and afternoon. The lookout is easily accessible by the H1 highway and Route 61 (Pali Highway). From downtown Waikiki it is approximately 11 miles to the attraction. Our friends dropped us off at the parking lot while we... More

With the mountains, the sea in the distance and wild chicken around you, the view is breath taking. It is sunny, warm and nice breeze. The lookout is not busy and the drive is beautiful. Plants are so lush and green. No wonder they call it paradise.

We rented and convertible and really enjoyed the ride and the view from this lookout. It has an exceptional view of the North Side of the island and has a short hike to see other views as well.

We took a short break here from our Circle Island Bus Tour. There is a slight walk up the hill to the lookout place where there is a platform and railing near the sharp cliff drop-off From this terrace, you can see the Windward side of Oahu -- very green, very lush, and very mountainous-- very spectacular, but not much... Can be accessed by exiting a freeway 61. It is free, and the view is great. But, don't take your partner to the hairdresser or barber as it is as windy as cape of good hope!! Worth for good camera shots tough!

For a view of the windward coast, this is the place to go. You'll see a panorama of the coast and when we visited in the late afternoon, the winds were blowing very strongly. There's a plaque there stating the hang-gliding record was set there and with winds like we experienced on that day, I have no trouble believing it.... More

This is a beautiful overlook with photo ops galore. Of note, there is a small fee to park there. There is a very long hike down to the bottom that is old paved road. It was after recent rains, there was a lot of mud on the path, so if you venture down, do be extremely cautious. The road is... More

The Pali Lookout is worth a stop. Parking costs about $3, and there is often someone sitting in a parked car who makes sure that visitors pay. When the wind is blowing, it is really gusty at the point, but the view of the coastal towns, ocean, and mountains is worth the bad hair day that follows the visit. Be... More

Not the most spectacular lookout on Oahu but still OK. It seems every point of interest has some sort of historical significance here. Still a nice trip away from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu.
