So I loved that this beach (sometimes called Big Beach) was natural, and no hotels in sight. It was very pretty. There were venders selling food in the parking lot, and I ate the best fish taco of my life. But I would warn to be aware of the tide and the wind. I lost my cover-up, it blew away... more

GO HERE!!! This is the best beach I have ever been to in my life. The sand is golden and soft, the waters are beautiful and crystal clear and there is even some good snorkeling. We saw two sea turtles. The waves are also AMAZING! We were in the water riding waves for more then two hours. more

We've enjoyed both Big Beach and Little Beach. We went to Little Beach on a sunday for the drum circle but we ended up leaving earlier than we wanted to because it became very, very crowded. We climbed back over the rock and watched the sunset from Big Beach and were amazed at how many people were still arriving to... more

We went there every day except one on our last trip to Maui. Lovely beach ad not too overly difficult to approach for an unofficial naturist venue. We did have one bad experience the last day which could have happened on any beach in Hawaii -- a hammerhead came close to the shore and everyone had to clear out. more

This is one of the most "beachy" beaches in Maui. I have been going to Maui every year since I was 16, but am too afraid to return to Big Beach. (I guess it's called makena but I refer to Makena as the black rock snorkel area a bit further down.) Anyway, on one trip we went and had a... more

One of the most beautiful beaches I have ever been to. I went in November 2007. Waves can be unpredictable though. Surf break seemed normal at the time then all of a sudden the surf break became huge. About 3 feet over the people standing near the break. That is when I saw a woman being taken out of the... more

My three boys and I went to Big beach to skim board and boogie board. I haven't boogie boarded in years ( since the 70's) and getting back into it was a little nerve racking for us older gals, but its like riding a bike. Fall off, get full of sand, and get back on. A little heavier, but no... more

While the beach itself and the beautiful scenery is fabulous, you MUST be careful swimming here. I've been to Big Beach numerous times and never had a problem; I do really like the area. However, on my last trip there (2006) I was hit by a rogue wave and tossed and tumbled as if I was in a washing machine.... more

Note to all: if you don't want to lose it, take it off before you get in the waters of big beach. This includes goggles, glasses, rings and occasionally swim bottoms. Suffice to say, the ocean claimed enough at big beach to ruin our day. more
