Everything you've read about Haleakala is true. It's one of the most beautiful sites on God's green earth. You definitely don't want to go home without making the trek. Two important points - you DON'T have to come here at dawn, and you DON'T have to hike up the mountain. If you just drive your car up the mountain road,... More

I love it up here. My favorite is the sunrise. Get up early as the drive is long and climbing 10,000 feet in such a short distance will cause your ears to pop often. Bring layered clothes as well as blankets. It is cold at the top even in daylight. Look for silverswords and be sure to visit the ranger... More

"unimaginable "I can almost touch the clouds and the sun seems not that far away....I am so stunned being here but I got it with altitude sickness got a sudden headache and cannot breath ...if you are planning to visit this place wear a snowy gear coz if you happen to it a windy day it's freezing and might spoil... Haleakala means "house of the sun" in hawaiian and that is exactly what it is. If you get there early enough, there will be no clouds and you can watch the sunrise over maui and neighboring islands. I warn you bring a jacket, though. Because it can get cold in the dawn hours... 50 degrees Celsius. (Well thats cold for... More

How many people do you know that can say they saw the sun rise over a volcano, above the clouds!? Yes, it may be early, but do it! It is worth it! It will be dark when you arrive, so bring flashlights and be sure to layer up! It is winter up there!! Seriously! gloves, hat, socks, uggs, pants, long... More

We left our condo in Kihei around 7 or 8 am and began our journey to Mt. Haleakala. It's a straight forward route from start to finish and there wasn't too much traffic when we went. The winding road felt like forever but it was fun to see how far up you kept getting. Most of the traffic was actually... More

Mt. Haleakala sits 10,000 ft above sea level. Don't believe me? You'll see planes landing at OGG that are well below you. You're actually in the clouds at this height and on a clear day can see the Big Island. For photography buffs, the best time to go is to be at the summit just before sunrise. Total travel time... I thought it would be tough to get up at 3 am to travel and see the sunrise, but we had not adjusted from central time so it was no big deal. I would even go again. It was really really cold, and even though I had read that I didn't believe it. Believe it, you want a winter coat.... More
