so long as you can prepare yourself for a a dangerous and scary drive, then you're going to be all right. it's not knowing what you're getting yourself into, and being mortified once you get there that can trigger the heart palpitations. it is really dangerous--there's no way around that, but it is doable. that being said, you can be... Everytime we visit Maui, we head around the West side first. Yes, the road is very narrow in places, and yes, meeting another vehicle can raise the heart rate a bit but there are pull over areas and other parking areas if you are a squeamish driver (I think a prior reviewer used another word aptly). The views along the... More

We traveled West to East around the coast and it was an adrenaline rush, awesome. Its not for the faint because of oncoming cars and steep cliffs. There is an a cool village with drinks and banana pudding in the middle. But be careful signs are limited and no guard rails around many turns. The best thing to do at... More

I am amazed that such a road really exists in the USA. Me and my wife were looking for the blow hole, which we missed and went a few miles further to enter this road. We were warned of its state by the hotel concierge but we never had a chance to understand that we were on this road to... More

My husband and I were going back from Kaanapali to the OGG airport and figured since we passed Lahaina many times, we'd try the other way on rt30. Scenery was wonderful, and then before I knew it, I was head on with a blue convertible on the side of a mountain. My husband and I thought we missed a sign... More

We (my 2 sons, ages 18 & 20, and I) were given a map of Maui upon leaving our cruise boat. There were very few roads listed on the maps, seeming like it was just the main highways. There was no warning at all and, according to the map, this highway was the shortest route. We decided to spend the... More

Don't listen to these pussies. It's a great drive. Start from Honolua bay though. We drive it twice every time we're here. Make sure you stop for some banana bread.

If you read the Map it says "Drive At Your Own Risk"! Next time I'll read the map BEFOREHAND! LOL Seriously, this road is not for those who aren't expert drivers with nerves of steel. The road barely fit the 2012 Camero I was driving. I met two cars coming the opposite way, believe me, you don't want to have... More

June 2012 I recently drove this road Kahekili Hwy 340 North towards Honokohau and Kapalua just to see what was back there on The Northwest Side of the Island. I Started my drive just after I left the Waiehu golf course not far from the airport and downtown I was on Highway Kahekili 340 Going Northwest. I would call myself... More

Yes it's narrow and you do have to be careful, but it's so worth doing. There are some fantastic views. It's nowhere near as busy as the road to Hana, we had no trouble getting around the other vehicles. Just go slow and enjoy the ride.
