Did this route 2 times so far, both clockwise, once in a convertible, second time in a minivan. As others have said, this drive is perfectly doable for everybody clockwise until the Nauakale blowhole, with plenty to offer (close to 36/38 mile marker). Beyond that, lie several one lane sections (and narrower) with sharp turns, cliffs and warnings of potential... More

We rented a Harley for the day at Eagle Rider in Maui and drove the entire West Coast of Maui known as Highway 340 or Death's Highway. I can see how why... the road narrows to barely a sidewalk size for two lanes of traffic, but the views are amazing, suggest starting on the southern end so that you are... More

I drove and it was fine. HOWEVER; the weather was perfect, the traffic was light (we only saw ~25 cars the whole time), and I live in a neighborhood where there is often barely room for one car on the two-way roads. I'm also known for taking my boyfriend's honda civic on roads suggested for only 4-wheel drives. If you... More

I cannot believe there are not major warning signs on this road! We thought it would be a great scenic trip and we don't mind windy roads but we have never come across anything like this!! I was crying and terrified as there was a one way section that went for several miles and we came to a stand off... More

Amazing, beautiful, scenic & very easy driving. A must do when in Maui, along with Hana & volcano trips. Sealed road all the way, lots of places to pull over & let other cars past. Best banana bread ever @ Julia,s @ Kahakuloa. This is not a dangerous, difficult drive by any means, go & enjoy! Karina

Although we had a lot of fun doing this, I would probably NOT recommend this to most travelers. Like most vacationers that take this road, we had no idea we had ventured too far and past the point that the rental car agency says you can go. Luckily, it was a beautiful day and we went fairly early, about 9:30... More

We happened upon this highway (haha) quite by accident, completely ignorant about the danger that lie ahead. With our two kids, I was driving when we made the choice to venture on, to the point of no return. I'm a good driver, but my word . . . I have never seen nor heard of a more narrow road, literally... Thought I had died when I saw a bright white light which happened to be the headlights of another car on direct course for a head on collision! This former hiking trail is a narrow path to the infamous Maui banana bread, which is halfway on this treacherous journey. Befriend an elderly neighbor that can bake bread instead. Save the... More

I'm surprised by so many negative reviews. This was the most beautiful drive we have ever seen (better than the road to Hana because that was too long). We accidentally did it as most people do, not realizing how long it would take. You have to go slow, like 5mph around the curves to make sure you don't hit anyone... More

During our first few days in Maui we decided to explore the Kapalua area as I was curious about the golf course and wanted to check it out. Since we were planning on heading back to Kahului later that day to hit Costco we looked on a travel map and saw the highway that looped around the northwest of the... More
