This is my favorite beach because the waves are so large and the sound is so relaxing. It's pretty dangerous if you want to swim unless you are really experienced. The hike down to the beach is very nice and different, it's also good idea to ride bikes or hike along the ocean as there is a paved road.

Beaches are difficult to rate as everyone has different criteria. I've known this beach for 12 years. Donkey beach is a minor hike from the parking lot, but there are never many people there, so even though it's a small beach, it never feels crowded like the more popular beaches on the island. The surf is always rough as there... More

As "RSW" wrote - solitude! The sand was incredibly soft and the beach was beautiful! Small, so it made you feel like you were on a private little beach. Since I went in March, the waters were rough so I didn't go completely in the ocean, but I still walked in the water which was gorgeous. I still can't get... More

Loved the crescent shape of the beach. Hardly anyone was here. We parked in the parking lot, there were bathrooms there, then walked about ten minutes down the path to the beach. I liked that you don't see or hear any cars from this beach. We didn't try to swim, just loved looking at the beautiful beach and ocean. Nice... More

Donkey Beach use to be a secret spot and only few people knew how to get there. You had to park at the side of the street and then walk along sugar-cane fields to the secret location. Unfortunately the sugar cane fields have been replace by a new master-plan community. The beach can now be reached through a parking-lot along... More

I have a long history with Donkey Beach. Back in the '70's, it was a secret beach; you had to sneak through a quarter mile of sugar cane to get there. It takes its name from a little donkey that was corralled right above the beach. Now, the cane field is gone, replaced by a luxurious development of multi-million-dollar homes.... More

Donkey Beach is a good beach if you staying near the east shore and don't want to head north or south. We love sunbathing here. It used to be a popular nude beach, however it's a bit more rare recently. Swimming and snorkeling here is poor, but we like to surf and body board.

We tried to boogy board here and it was horrible. The waves were taking over my 200 lb. husband.

Now, I don't really have anything to compare this beach to, because it was our first one to visit during our stay here in Kauai. I can only compare it to beaches that I have been to before, such as the Atlantic Ocean when I've been in Massachusetts, the Pacific Ocean when I've swam at Malibu, the Bahamas, where I... More

Out of the 10+ beaches we visited in Kauai, this was our least favorite. It is exposed to the surf and the wind, so even on a relatively calm day it was not pleasant. It is not especially scenic, having only a couple trees. The worst part was the flotsam and jetsam all over the beach. I can't imagine why... More
