We visited in February and were thrilled to see two Green Sea Turtles on the sand, the only turtles we saw during our 8 days in Hawaii. It is very scenic and though it isn't a large beach we enjoyed seeing all the black sand. It wasn't far off the road during our trip between the Southern Most Point and... More

This black sand beach is beautiful and had tons of sunbathing turtles. We stopped by on our way from Volcano to Kona. I would have been disappointed if we had planned a special trip to see it. The beach itself is not very large but we did have beautiful weather when we stopped. A local vendor we bought a sweater... More

Definitely stop here if you are driving through the southern coast of the island! I could have stayed in this spot watching the waves crash up onto the rocks for days. There were quite a few people when we were here and it was SUPER windy, but still worth going on a turtle quest (they are apparently here, sometimes). Adventurous?... More

Very cool to visit. No fee, easy parking and public restrooms (basics). The turtles were cool to see. Gets busy when a tour bus shows up. Water is cold! Freshwater springs flow into the water from the beach which chills the area. Bucket list must!

Punalu'u Black Sand Beach is beautiful. The water was too rough for us to go snorkeling, although we did see one brave couple in the water. There were several turtles snoozing on the beach while were there and I had a great chat with a senior lady who was selling coffee at the beach. Please give the turtles room. We... More

WOW - black sand!!! It was a really gorgeous place to visit. However, we tried walking around without our shoes on and that was a bad idea. :) Keep your sandals on, check out the black sand (black lava rock ground up by the ocean), and huge turtles who rest late in the day on the shore! Nice amount of... More

The prior review of "Black Lava Beach" is probably talking about a different beach closer to Kahena closer to the south east part of the island, to the east of the town of Volcano. This beach Punaluu, is close to Highway 11 nearer to the south point of the island, on the west of the town of Volcano. These are... More

Nice area, black sand is under 10 feet of lava now. Whoops! Mother nature has lots to see in area but sand is not one of them. Interesting area worth visiting and close to access road to live lava hike. Vendor selling awesome lava photos, walk too ocean worth while. Cracker monkey gives area 8/10 bananas, black sand 0/10. Check... More

If you want to see sea turtles go at dusk. We saw two and they let us come right up and pet them. This beach is also insanely beautiful without turtles. It has the blackest sand that is soft on your feet and rocks to climb around on. Not sure if it is good for swimming as we were there... More

Don't miss this spot to stop.....it is beautiful!! On the way to the volcano we stopped here for about 45 minutes. Beautiful black sand with a rocky shore and some great photo shots. Behind the beach is a freshwater lake that has beautiful lillies...the contrast is gorgeous. Could have spent an entire day here easily. Was not crowded...very peaceful!!
