What a great stop between Hilo and Kona. It is a must stop spot. You don't get to see pure black sand too often. The funny part is, you can sit in it, and it will not get you dirty. It is easily accessible, with great parking, restrooms, and a spot to buy stuff. When I have been here, it... more

We got to sit about 15 feet away from 6 turtles lounging on the beach. We were staying at KMC in the Volcanoes park so it was a little drive (like everyting else on this island) but well worth it. The waves were a little rough the day we went so we didn't get to swim. If you are in... more

How many black sand beaches are there in the world? How many times will you get to play on the beach with sea turtles right beside you? We arrived to Punaluu Beach around 5:00 PM on our way from Kona to Volcano. There were not very many people here, which made the view all the more serene and beautiful. Like... more

If you really want to see a black sand beach this is a great place to stop. Not too far away from Volcano National Park. Just a little farther south from Hilo. The sand is not as soft as white sand beaches, but it is pretty to see. It is also a great place to see sea turtles basking on... more

We went on the Pride of Hawaii cruise and really wanted to see one of the black sand beaches while in Hawaii. So we rented a car and drove to the Punaluu Beach. It was about 55 miles from where the ship docked in Hilo. We spent about an hour and a half there walking around and taking pictures. There... more

Our day was not warm enough to swim, but I had to see the beach. Pulled the family off the main road and found this place. Black sand alright...and well kept. There are notices where not to go so that you do not disturb the honu, and people respect that. I decided to just sit on the bench and take... more

My husband and I stopped here twice for lunch while we were driving from Kona to Volcanoes National Park, and then back to Kona. The first time we stopped was during the week and we had the beach pretty much to ourselves. The second time was on the weekend and the beach was crowded. There are picnic tables with a... more

Not much in the way of a laying-out-in-the-sun beach, but the pulverized lava-sand instead of the traditional powdery white stuff must be seen to be believed. more

If you are driving around the south end of the island, a stop at this beach is really worthwhile. It is an opportunity to see a very nice black sand beach with coconut trees in the background. And the humpback whales may come by offshore. When we stopped there in Janary I got to see one leap out of the... more
