Drive down this steep road across acres and acres of lava fields. 20 miles of Pele's awesomeness. See where the lava flows covered the land. There are numerous overlooks and places to stop to view the landscape. Take your time and enjoy the view. There are bathrooms at the end of the road.

You will drive through lava flows and by several craters... then descend to the lava plain. Be aware that you have a 3/4-mile walk (each way) from the parking space at the end to where the lava covers the road. Interesting factoid: the road was named when it followed a different route in the 1960s. The 1969-74 Mauna Ulu eruption... More

I recently visited Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and driving down this road will probably be one of the activities I remember most. There's so many stops you can make at the different craters, but the real treat is when you get down to the coast and you can see the incomparable view of the ocean, the lava rock fields, and... An amazing drive. Views at every turn. Make time to stop in one of the many laybys and just walk into the lava field to see the strange swirls and iridescent colours of the rock, and feel how light it is. We stopped at all the major sites - Holei Arch was breathtaking, as were the funny little loos over... More

It's another way of seeing the old lava flows. The special view points of this attraction is the coast with the lava arch, and the "end of the road" where the lava cuts the road, and also the road sign stuck deep in lava. I don't know why they have us park the car like one mile away and make... More

Very cool to see where the lava took over the road. Walk a little ways out and get a pic of the "No Parking" sign buried in the lava. Ironic!! Quite a long drive down to the end of the road very winding road, but scenic. It was VERY windy the day we were there. Good thing it was warm.... More

We missed most of the good views because of the mist that enveloped the park the day of our visit. This kept us from stopping at the vistas because there was nothing to see except white and we didn't want to get wet. Holei Arch at the end of the road was underwhelming; like the petroglyphs we could have just... More

Very cool drive through lots of lava fields. We stopped at a couple of the craters but not all. They seemed to be very similar. We did drive to the end. The arches is right at the end of the road and cool to see. If you want to walk the 1 mile round trip to where the lava covers... More

There are lots of places to pull over and many informational boards along the route. It's very easy to see some of the smaller lava tubes left behind.

We weren't necessarily planning on taking this drive, but since it was raining the park ranger suggested we go ahead and do this and hope that the weather cleared off later for the hike we wanted to do. We're sure glad we made the drive. Even in the intermittent rain, this was an awe inspiring drive. From rain forest at... More
