Chain of Craters drive is easy to miss (no sign when entering the Volcano Nat. Park)! It's just a few feet past the entry gate on the left. Very cool terrain with many places to see and hike thru various lava flows from the past... Very large "flow" area with amazing views of the ocean below and in the distance,... More

This road offers so many beautiful sites and stops along the way. Start by getting a map at the visitor center and then pick and choose the places you want to see and the stops you want to make. I would suggest if you go to the end, and walk out to where the road is closed to take a... More

Go early and avoid the crowds. We lucked out with a perfectly clear day, although it became increasingly warm as we descended to sea level. We stopped and walked at all the lookout points, and hiked to see the petroglyphs as well. Fascinating and totally worthwhile.

Highlights for me were the Mau Loa o Mauna Ulu lava fields (visible from the road), the Holei Sea Arch at the end of the road, and walking out to see the place where the lava has flowed over the road, which you can't drive to because the road is blocked off. From where you park at the sea arch,... More

Give yourself plenty of time for this because there are many craters and sights along the way. Take 2 days if needed. 1 for the lava lake and lava tube. One for cruising the lava fields. If you love seeing the awes of natures, then this is for you. See history solidified over roads that were once used on the... More

This drive down to the coast is a must do while in the volcanic national park. Make time for this. Ideally give yourself 2 hours plus. Enjoy the drive. There are lots of photo ops along the route. Stop to see the craters & walk the lava fields. Enjoy the amazing patterns made by soldified lava in the Lava fields.... More

Drive down this steep road across acres and acres of lava fields. 20 miles of Pele's awesomeness. See where the lava flows covered the land. There are numerous overlooks and places to stop to view the landscape. Take your time and enjoy the view. There are bathrooms at the end of the road.

You will drive through lava flows and by several craters... then descend to the lava plain. Be aware that you have a 3/4-mile walk (each way) from the parking space at the end to where the lava covers the road. Interesting factoid: the road was named when it followed a different route in the 1960s. The 1969-74 Mauna Ulu eruption... More

I recently visited Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and driving down this road will probably be one of the activities I remember most. There's so many stops you can make at the different craters, but the real treat is when you get down to the coast and you can see the incomparable view of the ocean, the lava rock fields, and... An amazing drive. Views at every turn. Make time to stop in one of the many laybys and just walk into the lava field to see the strange swirls and iridescent colours of the rock, and feel how light it is. We stopped at all the major sites - Holei Arch was breathtaking, as were the funny little loos over... More
