Presently not as good as it was thru 2013 BUT Mayor BillyK just suggested it'll get paved soon The lava undulations that cover the old CofC Road were plowed & leveled & graded in Oct-Dec 2014 Initial goal of this reconstruction was for the potentially lava locked population of lower Puna BUT to date the lava has not crossed Rt130... The road from the main Kilauea Caldera to the ocean is amazing! Stop along the way and check out the overlooks. Do Not Miss the Petroglyphs. Thousands of rock art with great descriptive signs. At the bottom, watch for the sea archs but don't get too close to the edge. Rescue is expensive and slow.

It is worth the long drive to the end. Lots of areas to view along the way. Unfortunetely, the road at the end is closed so you cant get to the end of it but the stop where they turn you around is a nice area to park and get out and walk down to the ocean.

The road is about 15 miles and doesn't take long to get to the end. The views are worth the drive even if you don't get out of the car, so you could just drive there and back if you're short on time. Some of the stops are better than others - like the Holei Sea Arch, the petroglyphs, and... More

We took the road to the see and wow. I was glad we brought warm clothes. The wind was brutal but worth getting out of the car to take pictures. There is a potty at the end of the road just in case. Very scenic.

We loved this drive... maybe loved it more than all the other amazing sights in the park including the caldera. One thing to mention is that the very very end of the road is temporarily closed and you can't walk further than the Holei Sea Arch/snack shack/bathrooms. Normally you can park there and walk down the road to see where... More

Chain of Craters drive is easy to miss (no sign when entering the Volcano Nat. Park)! It's just a few feet past the entry gate on the left. Very cool terrain with many places to see and hike thru various lava flows from the past... Very large "flow" area with amazing views of the ocean below and in the distance,... More

This road offers so many beautiful sites and stops along the way. Start by getting a map at the visitor center and then pick and choose the places you want to see and the stops you want to make. I would suggest if you go to the end, and walk out to where the road is closed to take a... More

Go early and avoid the crowds. We lucked out with a perfectly clear day, although it became increasingly warm as we descended to sea level. We stopped and walked at all the lookout points, and hiked to see the petroglyphs as well. Fascinating and totally worthwhile.

Highlights for me were the Mau Loa o Mauna Ulu lava fields (visible from the road), the Holei Sea Arch at the end of the road, and walking out to see the place where the lava has flowed over the road, which you can't drive to because the road is blocked off. From where you park at the sea arch,... More
