We were so happy to have visited Iximche. I have a small child, so did not go to Tikal this trip. Iximche was just the right size for us.

Iximche was the capital of a Mayan tribe that broke away from the larger Quiche in 1470 in the Highlands east of Lake Atitlan. It had a brief life, joined to help with the Spanish against Quiche but then was destroyed by the Spanish in 1520. The site is on a long and narrow high mesa, similar to Walpi on...

This was a fun entree to Mayan ruins. Worth a visit before you see Tikal.

While these Mayan ruins can't compare to those at Tikal or Copan, they are easily accessible from Antigua. They also aren't overly crowded with other tourists and at the back of the site is a tree where there are still Mayan rituals being performed. So these are a living ruin. My friends and I drove from Antigua to the Iximche ruins in about an hour and a half. It's a beautiful drive and there are a few roadside restaurants en-route that have typica food with fresh hand made tortillas and bathroom facilities. We visited Iximche as a day trip from Antigua. The site is well maintained and easily accessible. This is an important archaeological site in terms of the country's history. Signs throughout the site (in Spanish) give good explainations and descriptions of the ruins. It is easy to walk around the grounds and see the whole site in a few hours....

There are very few foreign visitors here, your fotos will be thus magnificent. Walk to the far end and follow a little path to visit the offering place. Do not be afraid to ask the locals for fotos - they just might be as eager to have theirs taken with you.

When travelling in Guatamala, if you can fit it in on your way to Panajachel, drop in for a couple of hours to Iximche, the small Mayan archeological site. We were there in Jan 2008. The weather was not too hot, and there were lots of trees and shade. It is a small compact site, easily walked in a couple...
