While in San Ignacio we spent a half day tour with a guide canoeing through Barton Creek Cave. It's a beautiful drive out to the cave, through the Belizean Amish community and then down through several citrus farms where you can see them actively harvesting the oranges (if you're there at the right time of year, of course). An earlier reviewer wrote that he tried to drive to the cave, but he was not willing to risk his car crossing a stream. My family went to Barton Creek Cave a couple of days ago. We went with a tour from San Ignacio. I was really thrilled with this area and cave -- the river flows through the heavy jungle and the water is a beautiful green. Let this be a cautionary note to any traveller who might be attempting to drive themselves to this site. You have to ford a river to get to the caves. we used belizean sun tours to go to guatemala, then the next day to barton creek cave. a man named Ted was our guid who coordinated everything for us with the guides, i HIGHLY recommend Ted as your coordinator-- he is super nice, a cool guy to talk to, and gave us everything we needed advice wise and information wise.... more
