Green Hills Butterfly Ranch is the place to go to enjoy Belize butterflies...

Green Hills Butterfly Ranch is the place to go to enjoy Belize butterflies and learn about them in the process. Green Hills literally has thousands of live butterflies on display in a 4,000 square feet walk-in flight area. The guided tour in the butterfly flight area and the Blue Morpho Breeding Center takes about an hour. The facilities are surrounded by a botanical garden with more than 150 labeled plants, shrubs and trees. These gardens are home to dozens of hummingbirds, and the average visitor can easily see eight or even more species while visiting the Butterfly Ranch. Green Hills is worth a stop on your way to or from other popular destinations such as the Mountain Pine Ridge, Barton Creek, Caracol or the nearby villages of San Antonio and El Progresso. We open at 7 am and close at 4 pm. Late tours are welcome but only after reservation.

Accompanied by a local guide we spent a couple hours looking at the butterflies, hummingbirds, and on the adjacent trails. Our escort to the butterfly enclosure, Celia, was poised and knowledgeable. She gave us a most enlightening tour pointing out the life cycle of many of the butterfly species and how she and other staff care for them. It was... More

Loved it! Tons of butterflies, chance to learn about the special needs of 15 species, and added bonus - a hummingbird garden with a ton of different species!

The butterfly farm was truly so incredible! There are so many different kinds of butterflies and in literally every stage of life. The guide was so knowledgable too and explained so many interesting things about the butterflies we didn't know. Bonus were the MANY hummingbirds that swoop around you outside the butterfly area. Also so beautiful. Worth taking an extra... More

This lovely little butterfly ranch is magical. The screened area for visitors allows you to spend time among the butterflies photographing, observing, and even having them land on you! And then there are the hummingbirds in the garden which are an added bonus. Highly recommended.

Don't ask me why 29 1/2 minutes, but that' the time frame "the woman" says you may spend inside the greenhouse with the creatures. If you're lucky, Sylvia will guide you along the path while relaying TONS of information in a very personable fashion. Told we could take pictures as long as they didn't flash, I was crushed to discover... More

The road to get here is a little rough but was well worth the trip. I could have spent all day in the butterfly farm just watching them. So beautiful and peaceful. The lady that gave us our tour was very informative and nice. Our 2 and 3 year olds were thrilled when the tour guide put some banana on... More

Visited this after Barton Creek as in the same area, amazing to see both the hummingbirds as well as the butterfly house. I was amazed at the number of butterflies and the knowledge of our guide. I've never seen so many rare butterflies, all managed in the interests of research which makes it so much more than just a tourist... More

I thoroughly enjoyed not only seeing the wonderful variety of butterflies at the ranch, but also learning about how they're rearing butterflies of all types. The flight area is full of lush plants and vegetation, making a walk full of surprises at every turn. I had the opportunity to be in the flight area when there were only 3 people... More

We enjoyed learning how the eggs were gathered and treated so the new butterflies could emerge from their cocoons. The butterflies, several species of them, are 'displayed' in a netted house. It was fun to have them land on us for photo ops. Very interesting to watch them eat the various types of food available inside their 'house'

We stopped here for a visit it's also called the Trek stop very easy to find if you are heading back to San Ignacio after visiting Xunantunich it is on the main rd. We were welcomed and given an explanation of all the butterflies and the process they are going through to preserve. Very nice place to stop.
