Green Hills literally has thousands of live butterflies on display in a 4,000 square feet walk-in flight area. The guided tour in the butterfly flight area and the Blue Morpho Breeding Center takes about an hour. The facilities are surrounded by a botanical garden with more than 150 labeled plants, shrubs and trees. These gardens are home to dozens of hummingbirds, and the average visitor can easily see eight or even more species while visiting the Butterfly Ranch. Green Hills is worth a stop on your way to or from other popular destinations such as the Mountain Pine Ridge, Barton Creek, Caracol or the nearby villages of San Antonio and El Progresso. We open at 7 am and close at 4 pm. Late tours are welcome but only after reservation. « less

Fourteen different species of butterflies. A little bit of a taxi ride from St. Ignacio along a rather rough road (but quicker than the highway). And the visual spectacle that you see is so lovely.... Amazing colours! Friendly staff.

We've been to several butterfly farms and this was a great one. The colors that you see are just amazing. We received a good overview from one of the employees. She explained the life stages from eggs to chrysalis to butterfly, and well as life spans of the various types. There are several varieties of butterflies, including the Blue Morpho.... More

It had been a while since I had thought about the lifespan of butterflies so when I had the chance to learn about them and see the various stages of development in person (rather than from a book), it blew my mind. In addition to seeing different types of butterflies, we were able to watch them lay their eggs. We... More

This property provides an excellent up-close view of some of Belize's most important inhabitants, the lowly butterfly. The ranch is helping to protect and study thousands of butterflies in a natural environment, so your entry fees also go to support a very important environmental project. You will not see more butterflies anywhere else in Belize, perhaps the world.

The property is elegant serene. The plant garden is well-maintained while feeling natural. The butterfly house is fabulous, Hundreds (maybe 1000s) of all sizes, shapes, colors. Owners were personable, friendly, genuine.

It's cheating, but nature photographers seeking close-up shots of Belizean butterflies should consider a visit here. In particular, the beautiful morpho butterflies are exceedingly difficult to photograph in the wild since they fly quickly and cover long distances, and even when they do perch they keep their wings folded behind their backs, displaying only their cryptic brown undersides rather than... We learned so much about the life-cycle of butterflies and our wonderful guide showed us butterflies in every life-cycle stage. Magnificent butterflies to see and have land on you!

This is an interesting attraction. The owners have chickens, guiney fowl and roosters in pens and loose. The butterfly house has 14 types of butterflies, all very interesting. They show you the life of the butterfly and how they raise them. There are also many types of hummingbirds that you can watch closely. You should know that the toilet facilities... More

A very interesting stop, albeit a bit of a rough drive getting there. We were there when the butterflies were very active, which is normally earlier in the day. You get to walk through their enclosure, and have them land on you. Afterward, there is a short lesson on how they are raised. As a bonus, there were lots of... More

We really enjoyed the tour and explanation of the work done here. We went on a nice day. Word is the butterflies are not active if it's raining. The hummingbirds were an unexpected bonus. It's a long way from San Ignacio but combine that with a horseback ride at MET or check at Moonracer Lodge for info about another great... More
