Description: The Belize Zoo is an institution that cares for over 150 native wildlife...
The Belize Zoo is an institution that cares for over 150 native wildlife, and promotes Conservation, Education, Recreation, and Research. It is also the first nature destination in Belize that is accessible to visitors with physical disabilities. We are committed to the conservation of Belize's wildlife and its habitats through the establishment of a well maintained zoological facility and education center, both poised to bring about a greater environmental awareness to the people living in Belize, and to visitors from abroad. TBZ believes that by bringing the people closer to the animals, which are their natural heritage, they will feel proud of these special resources, and wish to protect them for future generations. All Zoo "residents" were once pets; donated to the Zoo; rescues found injured, abandoned or orphaned and brought in rehabilitation; or born at the Zoo. The Belize Zoo receives no financial support from the Government of Belize, and generates funding to care for its residents through admission fees, tours, donations, and adoption and membership programs.

Area wise the Belize Zoo is rather small, but it packs a whole lot into the space. It was such a pleasure to see some of the animals that are native to Belize, but I will never see in the wild. It is worth the stop to visit the zoo. I spent a couple hours looking around.

The Belize zoo looks a little underwhelming from the car park but don't let this deter you, it is fantastic. The kids loved seeing the big cats, the monkeys and the bright birds. Go in the morning when the animals are active and it's not too hot!

A favorite attraction for us is the Belize Zoo, where the animals are shown in their typical jungle habitat. A unique arrangement of cages with the exotic black jaguar, other jaguars down to marmot sized cats is fascinating!! Tapir, locally known as the Mountain Cow, Howler monkeys and beautiful McCaws and Canoe-billed toucans are just a few of the array... More

Loved touring this zoo. Mostly shaded which made the heat bearable. A small but quality zoo. The enclosures were roomy and natural for the animals. They all looked well cared for.

The zoo was great and it is not far from Belize City so it is a great first stop. We met Jose G. - the tour guide mentioned in other posts here. He was great. As mentioned, the animals know him and he makes a great howler monkey impression. The zoo is a great first stop to be introduced to... More

We are not really Zoo people but this little zoo is different, all the animals are rescue animals, and live in large enclosures. The staff at the zoo really look after the animals and have a huge education project to educate the Belizean people on the importance of its wildlife. The zoo runs a night tour where you can go... This zoo is very well done. Lots of viewing areas from which to spot hiding animals. Love the Howler Monkeys Howl. The toucans and scarlet macaws were a treat. I would like to stay next time so to be able to take the nighttime "safari".

We stopped at the zoo on our return trip from Sartenja. We had visited the zoo several years ago when it was revamping from hurricane damage. The zoo features the animals of Belize. They all have ample room to move around. What is great is there are several viewing points so you are able to see the animals regardless of... More

While in Belize this year we took a mainland trip that included the Belize Zoo and Cave Tubing. The Zoo is amazing and includes many of the species that are indigenous to Belize. This Zoo has grown over the last 20+ years from a small, very local Zoo to one that represents the best of what Zoos should be around... More

First zoo that I did not see animals aimlessly walking back and forth. Animal enclosures are clean and blend into surroundings. All the animals have either been orphaned, are former pets or injured. Animals have been rehabilitated and are not introduced back to the wild due to their lack of fear from humans.
