Owner description: The Belize Zoo is an institution that cares for over 150 native wildlife, and promotes Conservation, Education, Recreation, and Research. It is also the first nature destination in Belize that is accessible to visitors with physical disabilities. We are committed to the conservation of Belize's wildlife and its habitats through the establishment of a well maintained zoological facility and education center, both poised to bring about a greater environmental awareness to the people living in Belize, and to visitors from abroad. TBZ believes that by bringing the people closer to the animals, which are their natural heritage, they will feel proud of these special resources, and wish to protect them for future generations. All Zoo "residents" were once pets; donated to the Zoo; rescues found injured, abandoned or orphaned and brought in rehabilitation; or born at the Zoo. The Belize Zoo receives no financial support from the Government of Belize, and generates funding to care for its residents through admission fees, tours, donations, and adoption and membership programs.

We visited the zoo as part of a day trip on a cruise stop in Belize City. The zoo is well kept, and the staff is friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our visit and recommend it.

The Belize zoo was an amazing experience. I was so impressed with the story of its founding and the animals were breathtaking. I wanted more time!

Far better than a typical zoo the Belize zoo has all the native animals in close to native environments. A wonderful and educational experience! Just watch out for the weeing tapirs near the entrance, they can spray you from a good distance! Junior the Jaguar is a must see and we could have watched him for hours, he even did... More

As part of our tour that day in Belize, our tour guide took us around this zoo. All of the animals are supposed to be rescues. Their habitats are pretty natural looking, especially for a zoo, so there were a lot of places for the animals to hide. However, most of the animals were visible, and for a few of... More

This is a place where you can see native animals in their natural setting. More importantly, it is a place were abandoned and abused animals are rehabilitated. It is best to get a guide when you go to enjoy the entire experience.

We liked the clean pathways but found the layout very confusing . The arrows on the signs did not give very good direction .We found that the numbered cages did not make sense... The pathways should have direction Arrows painted on them.We were delighted with the exhibits but would have liked to get a little closer to the Scarlet Macaws.... More

Zoos are not my among my favorite places but a friend urged us to visit the Berlize Zoo. I am glad we did. We saw local animals placed in spaces that was roomy and fitted their environment. They looked healthy. We had a good guide to take us around. This way we learnes a lot about Berlize, the environment and... More

Set in a realistic jungle setting and a lot larger than you would think. Animals looked well taken care of.

I went early on a damp day and so it was quiet and the animals were very active. I had a return taxi for BZ$160 (US$80). The canteen is good and the set up is doable in two-three hours. I delighted in the Tapirs! The jaguars were curious and I got some great photos up close. BUT, when I was... More
