Description: The Belize Zoo is an institution that cares for over 150 native wildlife...
The Belize Zoo is an institution that cares for over 150 native wildlife, and promotes Conservation, Education, Recreation, and Research. It is also the first nature destination in Belize that is accessible to visitors with physical disabilities. We are committed to the conservation of Belize's wildlife and its habitats through the establishment of a well maintained zoological facility and education center, both poised to bring about a greater environmental awareness to the people living in Belize, and to visitors from abroad. TBZ believes that by bringing the people closer to the animals, which are their natural heritage, they will feel proud of these special resources, and wish to protect them for future generations. All Zoo "residents" were once pets; donated to the Zoo; rescues found injured, abandoned or orphaned and brought in rehabilitation; or born at the Zoo. The Belize Zoo receives no financial support from the Government of Belize, and generates funding to care for its residents through admission fees, tours, donations, and adoption and membership programs.

Great zoo! Wonderful way to see native animals of Belize. Was told that it was started as an animal sanctuary of sorts and grew into a zoo. It is slightly labyrinthian and you could easily get lost, but it is not huge. And, got to hold a tarantula!

We loved the natural setting. It is smaller than most US zoos but this is a place where you are surrounded by the natural beauty of the rainforest.

Genuinely incredible place. Beautiful animals kept in humane enclosures. Just wish we had more time here. You have GOT to have this on your itinerary.

It was fun to visit this zoo, lots of different animals I have never seen before. Just something to remember, we went in the afternoon after lunch and most of the animals were napping! We were so disappointed! Maybe a morning visit would have been better!

What a wonderful collection of rescued animals! From abandoned Lucky Boy, to pelicans with broken wings, to the story of Springfield and her unknown pregnancy that led to Junior being born in the zoo .... it was a wonderful couple of hours. We paid the $50 to do the Junior encounter. What a magnificent cat! He rubbed along the cage... More

Took a day (2 hour) trip out to the zoo from Belize City. About an hour drive time inland. You definitely miss the ocean breeze as you get inland. Small zoo, inexpensive, all enclosures for the animals. Big cats are usually sleeping during the day. Several enclosures seemed empty. Small gift shop and cafe at the entrance exit.

Words just cannot describe the amazing time we had at the Belize Zoo which is not really like a zoo but more like a rehab the animals are well cared for and the staff is awesome! A special thank you to the zoo's director Sharon Matola who took us on the Directors tour (which is well worth the cost) it... More

Totally worth the stop if you are driving by. Easy to walk around. Small enough to see in short period of time and excellent exhibits. Guides and staff were very helpful. Nice to see conservation efforts for the animals of Belize.

Great rescue zoo with animals native to Belize; you will learn a lot from coming here! I highly recommend the guided tour, as well - you will get to know some of the animals (like Lucky Boy and Junior Buddy) even more than their signage lets on. Many of these animals are lucky to still be alive, so it's awesome... More

The zoo is an amazing experience. All animals are local and their conservation goals are very apparent.
