We stayed at the Tropical Ed Center near the Belize Zoo on our first night in Belize in July 2003. We booked months ahead and confirmed a few days ahead and still arrived to surprised staff and a lack of promised meals. About an hour from the city, the Belize Zoo has large, natural habitats for interesting birds and animals. The inhabitants are free to roam about, and often it takes a bit of time to find them -- so natural is the setting. This, of course, adds to the enjoyment. The Zoo and TEC are seperate, but located close to one another. If you want to lodge at TEC, you can go to the zoo, and they will call for someone from TEC to come pick you up.
