This excursion from Belize City was the highlight of our trip. Our guide, Emir Reyes, was born on the river. His knowledge of the river and it's secrets was patent. On the one hour boat ride to Lamanai, he pointed out rare creatures that would have escaped our notice, including a baby crocodile and a colony of bats hanging just... More

This was a great adventure. It was not entirely what we expected when we originally read the tour description from the cruise ship's site - the speed boat was not the "river tour" we expected - but it was a great time and I'm glad we picked it. Basically, from the cruise ships, it's a 45 minute bus ride, a... More

Look, there is no good way to get to this site if you are on a cruise ship. Just about everything in Belize is hours away from the ship. If you accept that you'll be fine. This tour included almost six hours of travel by tender boat, bus, and speed boat. What else are you going to do? Stay on... More

On 8/19/2015, several family members and I took a Royal Caribbean cruise excursion to Lamanai. For the most part, this was a very good experience and I would recommend it to others visiting Belize. Here are some of the positives: The speed boat ride up the Belize River was a lot of fun. It was a very hot day, so... More

While I expected more animals and birds on the river, we still saw spider monkeys and howler monkeys (the latter at the ruins). Lunch is really nice, the ruins are very beautiful and interesting, and you get to see the sugar mill and rum distillery as well. If you're in Orange Walk this should be on your to do list.

It takes about an hour to get to the river by bus over rough local roads and then another 45 minutes on the river to get to the site. The bus ride is boring but the boat ride is great since it's a high speed twisting trip with lots of banked turns. Once at the site you get another hour... More

Visiting the ruins was the highlight of my trip. Everyone has studied the Mayans at some point in their lifetime and to walk amongst the ruins brought history to life. The river tour is nice but the 90 minute ride up to Lamanai is a bit long, considering they get you back in about 40 minutes. We had a traditional... More

The hour-long boat trip, the only way to access this site, makes it even more worthwhile. You won't see hordes of tourists like at Tulum or Chichen Itza so have time to enjoy the buildings and surrounding jungle. Many plants and trees are labelled, and the little museum is worth a visit. When the driver of the boat announced that... More

The Mayan ruins are good; however what makes it a great trip is the boat ride to get there. These ruins are on a "lake" about a hour boat ride up the new river. The boat ride can last any where from 50 minutes to and hour and a half depending on how many wildlife viewing stops the driver/guide makes.... More

The trip up (or was it down?) the river was beautiful in itself. Carlos our guide stopped from time to time to point out items or wildlife of interest. The ruins themselves were amazing to see and climb up on, despite the rain that started halfway through our tour.
