Great hike... amazing scenery. My best advice is to pack along a pair of Tevas or Chacos if you are heading up to the top of the pass & beyond. There are several creek crossings on the Aspen side (above Crater Lake), and you will not want wet hiking boots (gaiters will not help you as the water in mid-July... More

The shortest way to hike to Crested Butte (approx 7 miles). If you are headed from Aspen you will start at Maroon lake 10,200 ft and summit at West Maroon Pass at approx 12,500 feet. This is a burner. I find it easier to hike from Crested Butte to Aspen. Lots of gorgeous wildflowers and wild raspberry bushes. Note there... More

Having completed the overnight hiking trip from Aspen to Crested Butte over the Maroon Passes the last week of Sept 2013 with three friends from the U.K., I'd thought I'd take the opportunity to provide a trip report to help others attempting to do the same. We arrived in Aspen from Denver on a Sunday, with plans to a hike... More

Our first day hike in the Maroon Bells and it was amazing! As it moderately climbs through beautiful stands of Aspen we hiked beyond Crater Lake and into the forest and across several scree fields. Very scenic with many stream crossings and a constant view of the pass. Sure wish we had planned to go on to Crested Butte...next time!

My daughter is getting married in November and we decided to do our last father-daughter trip to Aspen, with the focal point being the Aspen to Created Butte hike via the Western Maroon Trail. We secured a map and valuable info from the friendly staff at Ute Mountaineer in Aspen. We packed our backpacks with water, energy bars, and sandwiches... More

Started this Hike at 7am at the Maroon Bell Lake Trail Head. I am used to the high elevation since I have been living at 9000 feet for the past 7 month . My daughter who just got here from South Carolina had a very hard time ones we got up to higher elevation. She is very fit, but the... More

Weather forecast called for 50% Chance of rain. I don't mind walking in a nice mist rain, so we headed out. About 3 hours in, we began to pass others on the trail who had gotten to the creek crossings and turned around. The first one was mid calf for me and no problem, so we carried on the next... More

Highly recommend this trail. On the Aspen side, starts out at Maroon Bells lake, then ascends through a beautiful and rugged valley to a high pass. Then, you descend into a grassy and flower-filled valley on the Crested Butte side. When we went, there were an amazing number of wildflowers on the Crested Butte side. Got a ride back to... More
