We drove to the ski resort area (parked there for free), bought a bus ticket there and then took a bus up to the area where the hike starts. I think you can drive up to that point, but only very early or very late in the day. It took us about two hours to hike up to Crater Lake.... More

The trail is beautiful at each and every turn. The trail is an easy hike if you stick to the main trails and quite challenging if you take some of the side trails. It's worth planning on spending a half day or more exploring. There is a bus service from Aspen via Snowmass. The second half of the trip up... More

I didn't have big expectations, but I was amazed by this awesome spot. I wish I could have stayed longer and hiked for the day, My time schedule and weather was not cooperating. It took a bit of work to find the way to Maroon Bells by bus (the only way you are allowed to go). You must give yourself... More

the hike takes just over an hour for the 1 mile, 500 vert climb. Really neat to see the flora and fauna change over the ascent. Beautiful terrain. Wear hiking or running shoes. Take plenty of bottled water in a back pack. If you have a hiking pole bring it. The average walker/hiker will be winded in the first 20... More

We visited Aspen on our road trip through Colorado. The town itself is rather disappointing (compared to Vail, Ouray, Breckenridge, Frisco, etc). However, the very nice lady in the Welcome Center (together with good reviews on TripAdvisor) persuaded us to catch the shuttle to Maroon Lake. Thank goodness! The shuttle ride is very pleasant and the bus driver dispensed interesting... More

It's hard to work up a sweat hiking on this trail. Every few steps is a new vista that will stop you in your tracks. You couldn't take a bad photo if you tried. There's a $10 per car entry fee that can only be paid in cash or by check. I didn't know this, and had to go back... More

Even after 3 full days at Snowmass, too strenuous a hike was out of the question, but this walk around the lake was perfect. You can choose to continue past the end of the lake to extend the walk with a slightly more difficult, but short, trail called the 'upper lake trail'. We didn't push ourselves (both over 60yrs) and... More

Maroon Bells is really a must. So easy to get there. Buses go from Rubey Park in town. Very inexpensive. Once you get to the drop off at the top, there are many incredible choices. You can walk around the very beautiful Maroon Lake. You can take a moderate hike further to the serene Crater lake. You can go on... More

I took a gentle walk through the lake area of Maroon Lake - was so peaceful and the guide very knowledgeable. Others in my party had done a more hectic hike further along the trail up to a lake high in the mountains and loved it. There is something for every level of hiker. What Aspen is all about really.
