Wonderful, challenging hike!

This was the third time I have done this hike. Last time was 10 years ago. We wanted something challenging, before lunch at Pine Creek Cookhouse. I remembered the hike, but it was... read more

Out first hike around Aspen so still adjusting to the altitude. Did the climb up in 2 hours, with many stops to catch our breath. Good track, soft surfaces and stable. Beautiful forested areas finishing up with glacial moraines and lake. Small lake with good spots to have lunch on the shoreline. Quite a bit of trout activity which kept... More

This was the third time I have done this hike. Last time was 10 years ago. We wanted something challenging, before lunch at Pine Creek Cookhouse. I remembered the hike, but it was much warmer this time. Parts are full sun and it was hot. The hike is really beautiful, with a lot of different terrain and scenery. The lake... More

This trail is a little less challenging than Cathedral lake. It's a little longer but the trail is more forgiving. Expect 3 hours up and 1 1/2 hours down unless you are really pushing. Beautiful alpine meadows and an initial start though a mature grove of Aspen trees! Be sure to pack lunch to enjoy on the lake.

American Lake is a gorgeous half day hike. I would describe it as upper intermediate - difficult trail. The first part of the trail is steep but once you climb the switchbacks it gets way easier! So don't get discouraged if you are not in great shape - you can do it! Take a lot of water, sunscreen, bug repellent... More

We headed up early....on the trail a bit after 7, and we were rewarded with incredible time alone at the lovely lake! The hike up is good...strenuous but worth it! A wonderful way to spend a morning!

One of my all time favorite hikes. The switch backs are moderate at the start and the reward is the beautiful lake when you arrive at the top.

One of the most rewarding hikes I've ever been on. The views are stunning (especially in early autumn when the changing colors are nearly florescent). The trail has a good mix of steep inclines and a few steady paths, but nothing is as rewarding as the crystal clear lake on top. By far the best hike we did in the... More

Love that the trail leads you through all kinds of environments and beautiful lake at the end. Aspen forest, pine forest, rocks and open meadows are all included.

If you see my review of Cathedral Lake you will find this is much of the same review. The hike is rewarding but if you have bad knees, a bad back, or are not in somewhat decent shape then this hike is going to be tough. While this hike is considered 'MODERATE' by some reports it is actually rated Difficult... More

Less popular than nearby cathedral lake, this hike is well worth the effort. It's steep and challenging but you are rewarded with a beautiful alpine lake in a majestic setting. As always, bring lots of water, lunch, and rain gear.
