Beautiful drive. Extremely frustrating to suddenly arrive at a gate closing the road. Like u couldn't put that at the bottom of the hill? All the locals know this happens at the first threat of snow. The Angels Camp / Murphys side is well marked from the bottom of the hill. Murfreesboro had no such notices. Very frustrating.

My husband and I came from the Markleeville side of the mountain. I was doing research of the area including Ebbet's Pass for my book project. Traveling toward it on Highway 4 was fine until we were going up on switchbacks in the snow. Then the closed Iron Gate at one juncture killed any plans to reach the summit. Imagine... More

We were lucky enough to get to drive this road with no traffic in front of us - totally amazing! It's such a beautiful drive - lots of twists and turns and the road itself feels new. A little scary when cars/RVs are coming the other way as the road is quite narrow. Would love to drive this road again... More

It is one lane most of the way. The scenery is beautiful, but we had to dive on the very edge of the road or were sometimes forced off the road by very large trucks driving down the center of the lane. Some of these vehicles were large recreational vehicles and some were trucks pulling horses and farm equipment. On... More

This was a super fun drive, beautiful scenic views. Be prepared for a slow drive due to both steep, winding roads and the fact that it's a one-lane road with traffic moving in both directions. Had to pull over a couple of times to let other cars pass. That was tricky... please just drive carefully.

From the blue of Lake Tahoe to the heat of the Valley this was a great way to come over the Sierras. Yes, the road is steep and twisty (nothing like some of the roads in England or Scotland, US travellers beware!), but the scenery makes it well worthwhile. The lakes in the mountains were great, the only negative was... More

This road is not for the faint of heart and is not recommended for trailers and those prone to car sickness! Starting in the mountain town of Arnold and head east. Stock up on snacks and gas in Arnold. Make your first stop at Calaveras Big Trees State Park.. Take the walking tour which is self guided. Continue on and... More

It's a winding way up and down but it's worth it. I rode my motorcycle, took my time. Top was great!
