If you are in Door County make a point to visit Peninsula State Park, The Ridges Sanctuary and Newport. North of Ellison Bay this state jewel on the Lake has something for everyone. Hiking trails, beach. Our October visit was glorious. All colors at peak. Very few people. It is probably too far off the path for many. Take a... More

Went to Door County this weekend for fall color. Peninsula state park was very crowded and went to Newport next morning. It was almost empty. It has combination of nature and beach trails and offered us excellent photo-ops for fall color.

Took the family hiking at Newport State Park while visiting Door County on a crowded weekend in Door County. Newport was not crowded because it is more northerly. This Park is for those who love nature and enjoyable but not difficult trails. The park is very well kept. They have knowledgeable office workers/rangers. Highly recommend.

My husband and I planned to go to Peninsula State park to ride bikes on their trials but unfortunately the trails were closed due to heavy rains that fell a few days prior. They suggested we go to Newport State park which we did. The park was pretty much empty. We only saw a few other people which really surprised... More

This is not your typical camping state park. There are only 16 camp sites and they are all hike in sites. This is a wilderness type state park. But it's also very accessible even for families with young children. The hike ins are short, the longest being only 3.5 miles and most being around a mile but you still feel... More

The trails at Newport Park are excellent beginner off road bike trails. They are wide - no single track that we found - but really fun to ride on with the small inclines & declines. About 12 miles of trails to explore. The park also has a sandy beach, miles of hiking trails (check out the new poetry trail if... More

It is worth the extra miles to travel up to this state park. It was a lot less busy than the more popular Peninsula State Park but equally beautiful. I loved the beach. Not for swimming but more for sitting on the beach and reading/chilling/just relaxing. Pit toilets were the only downside for me. Clean - but there is just... More

This remote wilderness park is a great opportunity to get away from the crowds and experience the real Door County. Hiking trails are wonderfully marked and maintained. I am excited to try "hike in" camping in the summer of 2015!

We tent camp a lot & have spent time in many state parks and state forests in WI. Newport State Park IS nice, yet I can think of many more locations I prefer to hike/camp in the state. We recently camped on the rather unremarkable site 4 - no lake access (perhaps due to high water and gooey, marshy flooding).... More

My husband and I went here during the 4th of July weekend to get away from Chicago. The park is beautiful and so peaceful. We did a few of the trails and although they weren't difficult, they were enjoyable. Highly recommend this place if you need some time with nature. Also we didn't see many people at the park, especially... More
