I think it is best to visit the Vietnam Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, and Korean War Memorial prior to walking over to the Martin Luther King Jr Memorial. While at the Lincoln Memorial stop and look back upon the reflecting pond and image what it was like when Dr. King gave his famous speech. Then walk over to Dr. King's Memorial.... More

My husband and I were here at night - what a beautiful memorial. A lit bit of trivia that we learned...the address of the memorial is 1964 Independence Ave., SW...in honor of the Civil Rights Act becoming law in 1964.

I had only seen the statue of Dr. King in photos. In person I was surprised how large it was with the body sort of emerging from the huge piece of stone. Immense and moving. I loved it plus the words of Dr. King carved on other stones behind the main statue.

This was a very moving and appropriate monument to the memory of Martin Luther King Jr and his great work for America and genuinely made an impression on both of us - do take time to visit.

This I felt was quite a moving monument because when you walk through the white arches you think that is the monument but when you walk to the other side of the white rock, Martin Luther King Jr is carved out of it looking out over the lake. It's an impressive monument and one that you feel very sombre when... More

I have to admit that we were headed to the Tidal Basin to find the Jefferson Memorial when we approached a sidewalk through large chunks of white stone. I knew we had arrived at the Martin Luther King Memorial from photos I had seen. I could not wait to see the other side and view the great man carved out... More

'Out of the mount of despair, a stone of hope.' Enough said. Just have to see to get a glimpse of what Martin Luther King, Jr. wanted us to learn from him and share it to the world.

Apparently, the idea for this Memorial was born out of his own famous speech "I have a Dream", and his words "Out of the Mountain of Despair, there is a Stone of Hope". Two large granite pieces symbolize the "Mountain of Despair". Supposedly, if one walks between these rocks, one is moving through a struggle, just as Dr. King did... More
