We went to the The Phillips Collection mainly to see their latest exhibit: "Man Ray, African Art and the Modernist Lens". In addition to Man Ray, photos depicting African art by his contemporaries including Walker Evans and Alfred Stieglitz were also on display. The Phillips Collection is a lovely, smaller, museum that is a good place for an introduction to Art. It is less intimidating than it's Smithsonian counterpart on the Mall, and the paintings are shown in the smaller spaces - partly in the old Phillips mansion. The Phillips is different from many DC museums since it is not run by the government or the Smithsonian, but it ranks as one of the best art museums in the area.
