I have driven on northern parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia every autumn for the past 8 years (I'm a native New Englander now living in Virginia Beach, and I just have to get my "fix" of fall color!) Here is a side-trip I can recommend if you'd like to get off the parkway and explore a little.... more

The Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia starts at Shenendoah National Park and runs parallel to Interstate 81 headed into North Carolina. It is a very scenic, relaxed drive through heavily forested areas of the Blue Ridge Mountains. There are numerous scenic overlooks and you can always pull over on the grass. What a treat to get off the I-77 and head onto the Blue Ridge Parkway. We started our drive near Fancy Gap, VA, milepost 199.5. The sun was just rising and our eyes were treated to many spectacular views. I can't imagine a more peaceful drive! The speed limit is between 35 and 45 mph and honestly you wouldn't want... more

I would highly recommend that everyone on the East coast ride on the Blue Ride Parkway sometime during their lifetime.It was a very relaxing drive and a nice get away.We rode on about 2/3 of the parkway.Were really surprised to see the highest peak East of the Mississippi River.Mt.Mitchell in NC rises to a little over 6,600 feet.
