We had been on the eastern side of the Pecos Wilderness, but had limited exposure to the western portion. This time we headed up to the Santa Fe ski area and hiked up Winsor Trail. The trail is well maintained and is popular, though not overcrowded. Glimpses of the Rio Grande valley can be seen as you climb through the... More

My husband and I have been to the Pecos area many times to fish and hike but had never camped overnight. We decided to do so at the Jack's Creek Campground which is at the end of the road, past Cowles. The campground has around 39 sites, several of which are on the perimeter and sheltered by trees. The vast... More

Jack's Creek Campground is a great place to camp with your horse. It has a few pens and is open to riding in the wilderness. It's a bit high, so plan on staying a few days to acclimate to the altitude. very limited facilities.

Hidden gem in New Mexico. Avoid the tourists in Colorado and enjoy the northern Pecos Wilderness. Same scenery as Colorado without all of the people. I highly recommend a hike on the Rio Santa Barbara River. You can access this area at the Rio Santa Barbara campground southeast of Penasco, New Mexico. Once you completed the first three miles of... We had never been to this area before. We were amazed at the absolutely gorgeous surroundings as we hiked in the wilderness. Trails were not very well marked--we did not get lost, but did not reach our intended destination (Pecos Baldy Lake). Next time we will bring a map! We ran into hikers along the way; everyone was very friendly... More

A beautiful wilderness area that is well worth the time and effort to visit. Being a wilderness area, it is hard to get to and full of restrictions, but the results are worth it. I did a 4 day, 3 night backpacking trip up to the Truchas Peaks. I spend a night at No Fish Lake and the other two... More

I went backpacking on the Jack's Creek Trail. It's a really gorgeous area, and a real treasure. It's at altitude, so be prepared when hiking. Pecos Baldy Lake is really beautiful at close to 12,000 feet. Plenty of unofficial areas to camp, and the stars are amazing at night! Went at the end of May, it got into the 30's... More
