The Root River Trail is located in Southeastern Minnesota. It is a 60 mile trail that generally follows the Root River from Preston, Minnesota to Houston, Minnesota. There are a couple of side trails that lead to Fountain, Minnesota and Harmony, Minnesota. We started our bike ride in historic Lanesboro as it fairly central and is a good place to... More

We biked 20 miles near Rushford on the day we arrived in the area. The second day we biked 47 miles round trip from Lanesboro to Harmony and back. One of two couples biked another 20 miles or so on third morning when weather was sketchy. The Lanesboro to Preston to Harmony and back segment was great, made better by... More

The River Root State Bike Trail is absolutely gorgeous with lots of diversity in scenery from beautiful Minnesota farmland to bluffs, bridges and rivers. It is sixty miles but you must do it from both ways to really appreciate all it has to offer!

We drove from Chicago to southeastern Minnesota for the Labor Day weekend. We stayed at Eagle Cliff campground and brought our bikes along. The Root River Trail was accessible right from the campground. We rode east all the way to Rutherford (13.5 mi) in about 1.5hrs and then back. It is flat, paved and lots of shade in this part... We spent an afternoon riding the Root River Trail from Lanesboro to just east of Rushford. The trail was smooth the first 6 miles out of Lanesboro. After that, trail condition was not as good as we expected with bumps and small holes in the surface - and one broken spoke. Hope there is a plan to resurface in the... More

We stayed in Lanesboro for two days and biked the Root River Trail. Great Bike Trail! We biked both directions and throughly enjoyed it. The trail is generally level and we were able to bike with no problems. Lots of shade and beautiful scenery. Kudos to Minnesota for the great trail system.

My spouse and I are biking aficionados, trying out pretty much all the trails in our three-state region (MN, IA and WI). One that we return to, again and again, is the Root River Trail in southeastern Minnesota. We love starting in Lanesboro (in the heart of the trail), going northeast on the first day and returning late afternoon for... More

We biked this trail from Preston to Peterson. Preston to Lansboro & back, 21 miles the first day. Lansboro to Peterson & back, 28 miles the second day. This trail is BEAUTIFUL. Newly paved trail from Lansboro about half way to Peterson. All the trail is nicely paved and fairly level in this area. Almost all of it is along... More
