Our first visit to Vallecito Lake was very pleasant. The drive there from the Albuquerque, NM area is quite pretty. There are numerous lodging options and a reasonable amount of eating establishments around the lake. There's also a marina which we didn't use because there was a canoe available for use at our cabin. We were surprised that the lake... More

While the drive up to Vallecito Lake is much prettier than Durango area itself (much more lush, green pasture areas, and mountains filled with evergreen trees and aspens, along with a pretty river that runs near the road), the drought at the lake itself makes the area less appealing as it possibly was early in the spring season. It is... More

Vallecito Lake is a beautiful lake outside of Durango. Although the landscape shows signs of a forest fire in 2003, it is recovering nicely. The lake is large enough to not be overly crowded and is a great place to land some fish. We rented a pontoon boat and enjoyed spending the day just relaxing and enjoying the surroundings.

Beautiful man-made lake hidden in the mountains, close enough to Durango to give you the option of city attractions, but far enough to make you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. Campgrounds nearby looked stunning. Marina nearby to rent a boat (not the greatest boats in the world but they serve) and go cruising around. A great day... More

While the lake is not at capacity due the ongoing drought conditions, it is still a beautiful setting. Pack a picnic lunch and sunscreen, rent a pontoon boat from Doc's for a couple of hours and relax. Family from Denver were visiting family who live in Durango over the long weekend so 8 adults and two kids lazily cruised the... More

Lake Vallecito is only about a 30 minute drive from Durango, and is well worth the trouble. For hikers, Vallecito Creek Trail begins at the camp ground, and takes you deep into the Wemenuche Wilderness area. The trail winds back and forth above the roaring creek below offering breath taking views. For details on this fantastic hike, please send me... More

You can drive around the whole perimeter of the lake, including across the dam. My kids and I spotted a Falcon and its nest. Just a few boaters were out. The lakeside wasn't marshy or murky like many shore lines are. Beautiful Scenery, relaxing, kids loved playing on the water's edge. This was the best lake I've ever been too.... More

This is my home away from home. I've been going to Vallecito Lake for 10 years now. It's my family's favorite place for camping. We just recently got back last sunday from a week long camping trip. We always stay at Five Branches RV Park which is the best in the area. There are so many things to do in... More

There is plenty to do at this beautiful lake, from camping, rving, cabining, boating, hiking, horse trail tours, hunting, fishing, biking, canoeing, dining, and picnicing. I may have missed a few things to do there but I am sure when you get there you will be happy. The water level is good and has been better in the past. Every... More
