Great spot to camp on Highway 1

This was my second visit and while I didn't get the spot I wanted, it was still a great place to camp on our road trip up the coast of California. There are a lot of spots, some... read more

The oil spill presented no problem while we visited El Capitan Beach but baby oil removes any tar you encounter. The campsites here are very hard to reserve due to the lottery system. Family members who wanted to join us last minute were able to rent cabins across the highway at El Capitan Canyon ($250/night glamping). You can drive to... More

We just stayed mid-week at El Capitan State Beach and had a great time biking and enjoying the beach. We had site 35, which had good reviews. It was certainly private as far as being next to your neighbor, but the site was right next to the road. There was a lot of land between our site and the next... More

We had a birthday weekend here and couldn't have had a better time! The beach is beautiful, the nearby campground is perfect - with YURTS!! - in a wooded setting and with small cabin type abodes or tents to rent, gorgeous picnic tables, and live music on Saturday nights during the summer. We set up at a few of the... More

This was my second visit and while I didn't get the spot I wanted, it was still a great place to camp on our road trip up the coast of California. There are a lot of spots, some overlooking the ocean, but the other sites are very nice too and the beach is a very close walk. There is running... More

Maybe it's a California thing, but I could not believe that it was $45 per night for a primitive tent site with no water or electricity. I have never paid more than $15 for such accommodations in my life. BUT, it sure was beautiful! My boyfriend and I were driving PCH 1 from LA to San Francisco with vague plans... More

We very much enjoyed our stay here. Two nights in non-view campsite. You get the best of both worlds, ocean and trees. Take time to walk the paths there is so much to see. Campsites we spaced nicely, some better than others. Beware there are skunks that live in the wooded area. We can't wait to visit again. Only down... More

A jewel of the central coast State Park system, El Capitan is one of my favorite campgrounds. It is a large campground with several group sites as well. The campground is divided into loops, with each one having distinct characteristics. There are no hook ups and there is tent campers and rv campers interspersed in the park. There has been... More

Stopped here for a break on our way down to Los Angeles. We walked the beach, taking in the views and watching a pod of dolphins a few yards off the beach. Fun! There is a camping area a short way up the beach, which looked very nice.

Wow! The most perfect campgrounds that I've ever been to. Plenty of shade. Clean showers & bathrooms. Short walk down to the beach. The beach is amazing. I can't wait to go back.

Between family and friends we've been camping here almost 30 years, from teenagers through young families to just relaxing. Was there Halloween 2014 and will be there first weekend in May 2015. Get reservations way in advance as this place gets sold out early for the travel season and very crowded in the "off" season if there is such a... More
