This July we had a great camp night at El Capitan SB. The camp site overlooks the ocean. The beach is pretty nice and best part is that not so crowded like LA beaches. I heard about the tar thing, but were lucky enough to not to get it on us! :) The small town of Goleta 9 meals from... More

We were tent camping in a site well towards the back of the park, well back from the beach and closer to the railroad tracks and 101 Freeway. The site was a generous size and not too sloping so we were able to set up fairly comfortably. Despite the trees all around finding spots with morning shade was difficult. The... More

We are staying at Santa Barbara and having a brilliant holiday over from the uk. We decided to try El Capitan beach. Having been charged $10 to park we walked to the beach which was a narrow and rocky strip. We assumed the tide was in. After walking a little way up the beach my son noticed he had tar... More

Well, The view was nice, we got a camp spot in the reserve portion on the asphalt... No hookups and overcrowded from group sites. I was a little disappointed as my neighbors also we're being on asphalt. May have just camped at Walmart! No fire ring or spot, you can se where people lite fires on the asphalt, Don't do... More

We have camped here over the weekend with a large group. Very nice place. Good place with family. bathrooms are reasonably clean. Showers are good. There is a small shop at the entrance to buy the basic things (costly).

Everyone we spoke to, I mean EVERYONE said how great El Capitan is for camping. Our son wanted to do a camping trip for his 10th birthday so we booked a group site, Ortega, and invited a handful of other families to join us. The site has an incredible ocean view to one side and directly (I mean DIRECTLY) to... More

The tar you encounter on the beaches in Ventura and Santa Barbara county is not from the offshore drilling. It is naturally occurring oil seep from within the channel.

Nice tree cover, large sites, good toilets and showers, and you can hear the Pacific waves crashing at night. Yes, there is a highway nearby and a train track -- never a problem for us. Concerning tar on the beach, we found that the onsite store (if it's open) had a container of something strong and smelly you could use... More

This is one of my favorite places to camp in the State Park System. It is secluded and private with magnificent views of the Pacific in select camping sites. There is a large variety in the size and accessability of the sites, so really do your homework. I use Google earth to look at the area before I choose. Winter... More

Stopped by this beach on a whim driving south on the coast. First of all, they charge you $10 to park. The beach is rather small and thin. When you walk down the beach there are small blobs in the sand that look like little black rocks. It turns out they are TAR- and they will accumulate on your feet... More
