I was excited to take this trip, but it was really disappointing. Pros: Amazing view of the ocean near Santa Barbara, lots of mountains, wildlife. Outlets are available pretty much everywhere on the train. You don't pay for your bags unless you have a lot of stuff, which is nice in this day and age. Cons: Lots and lots and... More

What a wonderful way to travel! We took the Coast Starlight from Seattle to Emeryville for San Francisco and it was an absolute delight. We booked the sleeper car, and our little room was great, the seats were nice and spacious and pretty comfortable when converted to beds. What made the trip though was what you get when you travel... What great excitement checking in and then boarding this train. Being shown to our sleeperette, checking out the train with it's parlour car, observation car and dining room. Fabulous. All set for San Jose California.Travelling through Washington State we were given a running commentary by two experienced and retired "guides" and that just added to the enjoyment. Passing Puget sound... More

I recommend the Coast Starlight HIGHLY to folks who want to get up the coast quickly and comfortably. We rented a sleeper in a sleeper car and it made the whole experience worth it. We were able to sleep comfortably, got a few free meals, and access to the parlour car where we could get some drinks and enjoy the... More

We travelled from Vancouver stopping off in Seattle, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, L.A and San Diego. We had sleeper cars for most of the journey. Staff everywhere were helpful, attentive and cheerful. The sleeper car price included all meals - which made this real value for money. We only had 1 delay but that was for an hour outside San... Our family took the train from LA to San Jose and it was great. We had three generations on this trip, my parents, myself and wife and our 9 year old son and everyone enjoyed the experience. Of course as the trip was roughly 10 hours, so we did bring along some reading material and also the iPad for some... More

We took a family trip on the Coast Starlight from San Francisco to Seattle, with our 12 and 10 year olds. It was a wonderful experience. Our original reservation was for 2 sleepers on the second level, for the view. We had to change our departure day and the family car was available. I was a bit disappointed that the... More

We recently travelled on the Coast Starlight from Los Angeles to San Francisco. The coach we travelled in was freezing. Our seats were right by the steps down to the restroom area and the draught coming up was appalling. We were not the only people complaining about the cold in our car but the attendants were most unhelpful and rude.... More

--Avoid taking the Supershuttle from the Oakland airport -- it was a horrible, stressful experience. We checked our bags at the Emeryville Station, so they went into a separate car. We were a bit concerned about this, but at the beautiful Seattle station, there was a uniformed employee matching bags with tags. I’d do this again. --Roomette: It’s going to... More

I stayed in a 'roomette' from Emeryville (San Francisco) to Seattle for about 22 hours and I'm glad I took the trip this way. It was really nice to see Oregon and Washington from the train. As written earlier there is a difference in having a sleeper car ticket and a coach ticket. The meals were good, the service was... More
