Like many travellers, we dread the necessity of flights nowadays, and the opportunity to travel by train seemed irresistible. A touch of 50 s style offered itself in taking the Amtrak train from San Francisco to San Diego , via Los Angeles . We booked a room , with private facilities, as the comfort level offered seemed good, meals were included... More

My boyfriend and I took the 18-hour trip one-way from San Francisco to Portland. We were heading to Portland for Thanksgiving anyway, and wanted to try something different, so we booked a roomette. Overall, we both enjoyed it as a fun one-off, but were expecting more from the experience. I'd recommend it if you're heading somewhere anyway and don't want... More

We boarded the Coast Starlight at Portland - having booked a roomette we were entitled to use the Lounge which provided free tea, coffee, soft drinks, water etc. No wifi available but we were told that it would be available from Parlour Car on train! It wasn't! Apparently it failed some time ago and as yet has not been fixed!... More

There are constant mudslides in washington state. This was my second in a few months. I have to take this wretched train to connect withbuses home or ot can cost me one hundred dollars more i stead of two. I just can not travel at the higher cost. Another two mudslides today...do you think they told us as we were... More

Pros: Great trip-Beautiful scenery along the Calif. coast and Oregon forests. Have 11 trips to/from Portland to Los Angeles in bedroom cars-cost more but more comfortable than coach. Most staff and attendants are helpful and courteous. Cons: Heard during our last trip from staff that Amtrak will remove the wonderful Coast Starlight Parlor Cars for sleeping car travelers? If true... More

We wanted to do something different for our honeymoon, so we took a cross-country rail trip from Portland OR to New York City. This meant taking the Coast Starlight from Portland to Sacramento, where we picked up the California Zephyr. We had sleeper accommodations (roomette) on each. First of all, remember that this is a train. That seems obvious, but... More

The train is nice enough. Leg room and feet rests... etc. Nothing fancy but better than a plane in that respect. That being said, the announcements in the train are mostly about pointing out perks for sleeper car passengers... useless to anyone traveling for a day. And aparently the WiFi listed is just for sleeper guests. So enjoy your 8... More

Coast Starlight was (almost) all we hoped it would be. Really great experience and views to die for if you are on the right side of the train! We were travelling from LA to San Jose and although it wasn't an overnight journey it was worth paying the extra for the sleeper car as we had complete privacy, meals were... More

I have so far ridden four of the scenic Amtrak trains (Empire Builder, Southwest Chief, California Zephyr and Coast Starlight) and I think the Coast Starlight was the most pleasant. The scenery is great and this is the only train in the Amtrak system, according to the bartender, that has a parlour car reserved for the sleeping car passengers. I... More

This is not going to be a particularly fair review of the Coast Starlight because it is like a sumptuous 12 course dinner and I am only reviewing one of those courses. I would have loved to have boarded the Coast Starlight in LA with a reserved bedroom with a private bath with the champagne and the wine and food... More
