We took the Coast Starlight from Los Angeles to San Francisco, leaving LA in the morning and arriving late that evening in Oakland. We were then bussed into San Francisco (where there are several stops). It's not cheap (especially if you get a small sleeper room) and you are subject to unannounced and unexpected delays more often long that short.... More

There is no better way to see some of the awesome beauty of the West coast than the Coast Starlight....but if you choose a sleeper room beware of the "closet" cunningly referred to as the "sleepette" - and if Jay is your cabin steward you may wish to move to another car! The food was awesome and prepared exactly as... More

We did the LA to Sacramento leg. Boarded at 10am and arrived at 1.00 am so its a long day. We had a sleeper however the top bunk is small and you need to be able to climb. If I was on the whole over night I would go for the next cabin up. Staff very nice. Food included in... More

Our family of four travelled in a 'family room' sleeper car from L.A. to San Francisco, a journey of around 11 hours. The room is at the rear of the car on the lower level and spans the cars width so we had a window on each side. This was great, as many sleepers only had windows facing East so... More

We took this train from LA to Oakland on a Sunday in April so the train was not even half full. We ate dinner in the dining car; I had the chicken and he had the steak - both were great. Only complaint is that the chicken was a little dry. When traveling North, you will want to grab a... More

I took my wife on this train despite her objections to train travel. We took it from LA to Salinas, and then from Emeryville (San Francisco) to Portland. Our intent was to travel to Seattle, but there was track work north of Portland so we were bussed the rest of the way (planned weeks in advance). Sat in coach from... More

We travelled from LA to Seattle on the Coast a Starlight, because we have enjoyed overnight train trips in sleepers in Australia and Canada and because we were led to believe this was a ride not to be missed. The service from the start was good and continued to be that way - friendly and helpful. Our sleeping car was... More

This is a wonderful way to travel. We recently took the Coast Starlight from Seattle to Los Angeles and back. We had a bedroom which entitled us to the excellent meals in the dining car plus the use of the Parlor car. These are really great. The service and food are very good. We really enjoyed the views, meals and... More

For the first leg of our journey, my wife and I took the Coast Starlight Amtrak train from San Jose California to Seattle Washington. We've never done a train trip before, so the entire experience was a bit of an adventure. The train left Diridon station at around 8:20pm on a Monday, and arrived into Seattle's King Street station a... More

If you like train rides, this is a must. Leaves 10:10 AM arriving in Seattle at 8:37 PM the following night. The name is a bit misleading as the trip is about 1400 miles and you travel the ocean for 104. However, Puget Sound also is a waterfront track just before arriving in Seattle. For golfers, you pass directly next... More
