Relaxing and definitely better than the hassle of driving!

We booked this because my husband no longer drives and I did not feel confident taking on such a long drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles without help. I also liked the idea... read more

We boarded the train in Los Angeles and rode it to Portland, OR. The scenery is spectacular. We live in Ft Lauderdale so the landscape up the coast was a welcome sight. Unfortunately the train blew an engine and we were delayed almost 7 hours getting into Portland. Forget about any perks Amtrak once gave out. There are none. We... More

The Coast Starlight is an enjoyable and relaxing way to travel along the west coast of the US, especially between major cities where a car may not be needed. We took the train from Seattle to Portland, and though the trip was short, it was quite nice. The views are amazing! In fact the guide described it as one Amtrak's... More

We booked this because my husband no longer drives and I did not feel confident taking on such a long drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles without help. I also liked the idea of a different form of transport to the stress of flying. My main concern was making sure that we caught the Thruway bus and made our... More

During this Amtrak adventure my daughter Ren and I visited 24 states, D.C., and 19 state capitols and covered 7800+ miles in two weeks. The food was good in the regular diner car, however Outstanding in the Pacific Parlor car. The lamb was the best I'd Ever eaten.

We went from Portland to Emeryville, and it was a long trip. Despite what others are saying, the coach seats are not really that good for sleeping in. At a push, you can stretch out across two seats and be semi-horizontal (assuming there is the space), but it definitely wasn't a comfortable restful night. I didn't see the bed parts,... More

First point - there is nowhere to buy food/drink/snacks at Seattle station so you either bring it with you or walk a hundred yards or so to a couple of cafes situated on the main street. Our train left on time and we were looked after by the charming Miriam who made sure we settled in to our bedroom. There... More

I travelled from Oakland San Francisco to Oxnard California and despite having a reserved seat spent the whole journey in the Viewing Carriage. The views are unsurpassed with the glass windows curving around from the roof down the sides of the carriage. The landscape is ever changing from market gardens to oil drilling fields to a massive correctional centre at... More

Fortunately we read the other TA reviews before taking this trip and just booked coach class seats. The seats were spacious and comfortable. We checked out the couchettes and we're happy that we did not pay the huge extra fee for not a lot extra. We took the journey from Seattle to Emeryville and I am not clear as to... More

We took Amtrak's Coast Starlight from Seattle to Emeryville (San Francisco area) which was an overnight trip. Our bedroom cabin was comfortable during the day and nice to have or own bathroom, but it was VERY crowded at night once the beds were made up. I had the top bunk and let me tell you, it was not fun! There... More

One of the better Amtrak routes. Fantastic scenery along the southern California coast, truck garden farming, beautiful ocean views, etc., good food in dining car.
