I have so far ridden four of the scenic Amtrak trains (Empire Builder, Southwest Chief, California Zephyr and Coast Starlight) and I think the Coast Starlight was the most pleasant. The scenery is great and this is the only train in the Amtrak system, according to the bartender, that has a parlour car reserved for the sleeping car passengers. I... More

This is not going to be a particularly fair review of the Coast Starlight because it is like a sumptuous 12 course dinner and I am only reviewing one of those courses. I would have loved to have boarded the Coast Starlight in LA with a reserved bedroom with a private bath with the champagne and the wine and food... More

I have always wanted to take an overnight sleeper car train trip since I was a child. We decided to take the Coast Starlight from Union Station in Los Angeles to Portland and spent a long weekend in Portland. We reserved a bedroom w/private bath and the trip took from 10:10 am on Thursday to 3:32 pm on Friday, about... More

Went to visit family on the central coast and did not want to drive for 9 hours so I took the Coast Starlight from Redding CA to SLO. When I boarded the train in Redding at 3:30 am I was pleased to find my bed was already made up and I was able to get a few hours of sleep.... More

Seattle to LA in a roomette. I am struggling to reconcile some positive reviews on the Coast Starlight with my own experience, which was an awful one. The roomette is expensive, tight for one person and too tight for 2. Be sure to have gymnastic experience when the beds are down, and don’t expect to find a home for anything... More

We visit regularly from Australia but sick and tired of fly in and fly out of many destinations. We decided to do the Coast Starlight after a bit of googling and did not regret any of it. We travelled from Seattle to LA. We had a sleeper room with toilet and shower (a bit small) but spent the majority of... More

We (couple 60+ years old) took the Amtrak from Santa Ana to Los Angeles then on Coast Starlight to Seattle. Be sure to specify deluxe sleeping car if there is more than one person. Very small space, but maneuverable. Might have some problems if you are claustrophobic. Pacific Coast scenery was breathtaking. Food was excellent. Take a good book for... More

Taking an overnight trip on a train with sleeping accommodations has been on my wish list ever since, as a youngster decades ago, Amtrak had some sort of open house and I was entranced by the bedroom with the bathroom where you shower over the toilet. On an episode of "Sex and the City", Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) was... More

Boarded the Coast Starlight in Seattle, WA. Their King Station has been beautifully restored since the last time we were there (17 years ago!). As much as we looked forward to this leisurely trip South, it became quite evident right off that "things aren't what they used to be". We noticed 4 or 5 larger sleeper rooms vacant so tried... More

We took the train from Los Angeles to Portland. We paid for the sleeper which then allows access to the Parlor car and all meals and non-alcoholic beverages are included. We left LA at 10am and arrived Portland at around 3:30pm the next day. On the way up we went along the coast through Vandenberg Air Force Base. You can... More
