We flew into San Francisco and drove to LA over the course of a couple of days, and it was incredible. The views were awe-inspiring, and we saw whales 3-4 times, as well as elephant seals, redwoods, spectacular sunsets, cliffs and oceans, fields of produce, Pebble Beach, even Hearst Castle. I would highly recommend anyone going to either San Fran... More

This is a curvy road down the coast of California, often with minimal shoulders and steep drop-offs. I was surprised to see large RVs and trailers attempt to make this trip. The sights are beautiful and there are pulloffs along the way. The sheer beauty of the coast makes this an excellent trip. Some places we had rain and fog... More

This was a great drive up until Julia State Burns Park. We decided to keep going to Cambria which made a long day and it was very foggy on the second part of our drive. We went back to Carmel via 101 and the vineyards through there were awesome. It was amazing to go from the water to the forest... More

Looking at a map with a yellow line paralleling the coast is an enticing magnet, anytime. To contemplate one of the world's greatest road trips, the Californian stretch of the Pacific Coast that fields glorious cliffs and secret bays, the bright lights and glitter of LA and San Francisco, added to old-world charms of artists' enclaves such as Carmel and... Driving down from SF to San Simeon, we got the chance to experience Route 1. As spectacular as the road and views are, I couldn't stop thinking about the planning and engineering skills that went into the construction. As tempting as it is to rush down the road, so you can get to your hotel before midnight, take your time,... More

Maybe you want to head up Route 128 from Cloverdale to Mendocino, feel the climate change as you go from the land of warmth and dry sunny golden hills to the land of fog, wind and cool mist. It's awesome. North of Fort Bragg you'll find MacKerricher State Park, a sweet place and more coastline scenery, but who doesn't like... More

We started from San Francisco down to LA. First stop Monterey beach, went whale watching and stayed the night. Next morning starts the drive...took us over 8 hours because we stopped at so many "Vista Points" - scene points. Each view is breathtaking and amazing, at one point we saw a few whales close to the shore line. Now we... More

Have gone up and down this highway many many times over the years and always enjoy the part of the highway between San Luis Obispo and Big Sur the most. It is miles and miles of perfect views of the coast and hills, and some of the most beautiful trees I have ever seen. Please make sure people that you... More

What an amazing view. I recommend this to everyone - I never imagined how beautiful this experience would be. I hope to one day finish this drive but leave from San Fran.

The views are magnificent of the rugged coastline, rocks and sealife. But the drive has many hairpin curves, as well as a lot of mountain bike traffic that share the road, so the trip can be scary. HINT: Be sure to see the elephant seals at Piedra Blancas, just north of San Simeon. Take your time driving and enjoy the... More
