We have driven most if not all of highway 1 but generally one does it a small piece or a major piece at a time. Some or our favorite areas along highway 1 are: 1) Crescent City to Mendocino - excellent views of the ocean, tide pooling, redwoods, nice inns, and beach walks; In Crescent City area, also the lighthouse... This drive is a must! There are many viewing points to stop along the way. The elephant seal viewing point was our favourite. Don't stop at The Whale Watchers Cafe (for more information see their reviews).

This is one of the best drives in the country outside Hawaii. We drove it South to North but I think its better North to South. Take the time to pullover and enjoy it/take photos. There are numerous stops along the way and plan on two days.

We started in San Francisco and stopped in Cambria. We went straight over the mountains to Las Vegas in one go. Make sure to have at least 2-3 stayover and make sure you have time for many stops. The view is spectacular and the beaches are very nice. It is a must to visit Monterey, San Simeon, Carmel, Cambria. You... More

I checked Google Earth before we went there but the real nature, with wild rocks falling into the sea is soooo beautiful! I made twenty or more stops almost on each view point, get out from the car and made a picture! Beautiful, unforgettable for a long time!

We travelled along the northern section of Route 1 and is really a must do drive. There are plenty of stopping places to take in the marvellous views. A stop at the Sea Ranch restaurant for lunch is also a must, great sea views and delicious foods. Route 1also passes through mountains and forests as you drive towards Hwy 101... More

We drove from Los Angeles to Santa Cruz in our RV. This is a very nice drive. We also drove along the same road in Oregon. If I can do it in a 22 foot class A motorhome any car or truck should have no problem. I would fill up with gas before leaving a built up area because we... More

Fantastic ,long , tiring but many views and animals such as Seal elephants can be seen. Santa barbara, Carmel are the must beatiful plasesi if you have time stay one or two nights at these cities. Its alternative is a boring highway . You must fill your oil because there are miles without a gaz station.
