great, well cared for paths through the giant sequoias in the North Grove. Spring for the 50 cent guidebook that is at the start of the trails. It is one of the best written ones I've seen and has a lot of great information on the trees, the park and the history. The walk around the main area is super... More

The family has been coming here for years. It is a beautiful state park with all the amenities -- hot showers, flush toilets, a nice variety of campsites both on the lower and upper areas, ample water faucets and trash bins -- in some of the most beautiful scenery in California. The ranger talks are wonderful. The bathrooms are cleaned... More

We visited the Calaveras Big Trees SP just outside of Arnold, California in March of 2012 and had an absolutely wonderful experience. We happened to visit the park after about 6 inches of snowfall and the park was absolutely gorgeous. The visitor's center is small but nice, and 2 of the volunteers steered us in the right direction as far... More

A small preserve of magnificent giants on the slope of the Sierra near Murphys and Arnold. Endless space for picnics, short hikes, and near solitude. Arnold is a coupe of miles away with numerous eateries, a farmers market, bookstore, and picnic supplies. Free admission but a car fee. More

I cannot believe how beautiful and majestic these trees are. I went to the North Grove as I only had a couple of hours available. It was well worth my time. It had snowed a few days earlier and the ground was still mostly covered despite the fact that it was nearly 70 degrees making it that much more beautiful.... More

We stopped at Calaveras in January after a trip to Yosemite. We didn't have our dog so we could walk the North Loop finally. Fabulous is all I can say. The loop is 1.68 miles, easy flat grade, with very informative signage. This is a fantastic view of old growth sequoias that will leave you speechless. Don't miss it as... More

I would have to give this park and A+ for being able to get out and walk thru a large grove on a flat path. So many trees here and a great self guided tour. Lots of benches to set and rest if needed. My husband liked this grove over all the other groves in the state. More

I love hiking in the North Grove - about 5 miles round-trip and fairly flat. The trees are amazing and the total experience is very zen-like. One tip= if you can go early in the morning. You can get the full experience without a lot of noisy hikers later in the day. More
