We started in Feyattville, hiked Devils Den, drove to Greers Ferry Lake, stopping to hike in Hidden Valley and lunch in Jasper. Canoed the Buffalo River, climbed Sugar Loaf Island, and fished the Little Red River. Very pretty rolling green hills and mountains. Hiking featured lots of swimming holes, so bring a swimsuit and swimming shoes. The Ozarks are affordable and the people are friendly... We drove through Eureka Springs without stopping-- it seemed touristy. Otherwise no crowds.

My husband and I were on our way back from OK to AL and decited to take a detour to the Ozark Mountains. We were amazed by the beautiful drive and stopped at the Buffolo Outdoor Center to get information on how to get to Whitaker Point, a place my husband wanted to see. We then took a drive up to one of the mountains, parked the car and went on a 1 1/2 mile walking trail. The walk, up and down through the forrest, was worth the trip. It took us about an hour to get to Whitaker Point. Just take a look at the pictures below. What an amazing view. Be prepared to wear good clothing, hiking boots, bug spray, and take plenty of water with you.

Pedestal Rock and Kings Bluff - South East corner Newton County - Arkansas.
These two easy loop trails of 2.3 miles and 1.7 miles respectively, begin at the same parking lot, about a mile west of the Ben Hur, on State Road #16.
You can reach it by taking SR #7 north, from Russelville on the I-40. After about 30 miles, you take the SR #16 going right (east). The marked parking lot and trailhead is about 9 miles from that junction.
The Pedestal Rock is an impressive rock formation, accompanied by many more unique rocks on the edge of the cliffs. Besides beautiful views of the densly tree-covered Ozark National Forest, you can choose one of several spots in which you can carefully climb down and walk your way below and within the caves, arches and pedestal rocks that characterize this place. Be sure to watch and instruct your children to very careful behavior. The rocks may be wet and slippery, and in cases very dangerous.
Once you had enough of these formations, continue the loop trial and access the one of 1.7 miles of the Kings Bluff. Although the two attractions are so close to each other, they offer a different kind of experience and view. Kings Bluff is in a way even more impressive because of its many erect towers of standalone rock formations. It is most unique and versatile, but the cliffs here are even higher and require very close paternal attention and instructions, if going with small kids. This trail also includes a big plane rock from which a high waterfall drops down to the valley below. The amount of the water depends on the rains and the season. It was very small, last week (end of August). And again, soon the automn colors of the leaves will intensify everything even more to provide a fantastic landscape and nature experience. The preview of single red leaves here and there, has already begun and points to its vast potential in a few weeks. Enjoy.

My husband and I hiked the Kings Bluff Trail at Pedestal Rocks. There was very little water flowing over the waterfall in early September but the views of the rock formations were outstanding. The trail is not difficult but apparently there is a lot of poison ivy. We thought we were being careful and wore long pants and hiking boots but both ended up with rashes on our ankles and lower legs. Ouch! Time did not allow for us to hike the other trail but hopefully next time we are in Arkansas....maybe when the temperatures are a little cooler. It was pretty warm doing this in the 90's with high humidity. I would be extremely cautious about taking young children on this hike. Besides the poison ivy, there are steep dropoffs and few guardrails or warnings. I think it took us about an hour and half to very leisurely walk this trail stopping for tons of pictures and piddling around for a while at the waterfall.

Beautiful part of the state. Green rolling hills, beautiful plant life, creeks, hills and the beautiful Buffalo river. Watch out for copperhead snakes and be careful on the extremely curvy roads.

Went back there after more than two years, with high expectations to see the beautiful autumn colors. And indeed, although the rock formations have not changed that much during that time, the rest of the views has. There were so many colors everywhere. Such amazing sights of the Pedestal rocks, the tunnels below, the cracks that expose a different view with each passing step. Nature at its best, at probably the best season to visit. Let's allow the pictures to reflect and express what words can only try.
