My husband and I had a few hours to spare before we took the ferry to Wellington. I heard it's a beautiful place. After breakfast we took a nature trail walk to Picton Sound. From the trail we saw a few Fantails chirping around the trees. This was a treat for us, our first time to see and know there... More

We have been to places very similar to Picton Sounds, but here the climate is not too hot or too cold, the town is clean and the bays unspoilt. Marlborough Sound contains a fifth of the New Zealand coastline. Many holiday homes, boats and trampers arrive in summer but there's still a feeling of remoteness.

Picton is the gateway to the Queen Charlotte Sound, one of the main sounds that make up the Marlborough Sounds NZ. The other two main sounds are the Pelorus Sound and Kenepuru Sound, out of Havelock. Picton is a great little township to explore with lots of arts and crafts, cafe and restaurants.

Along the waters front there are some DOC walkways. I took the first called Victoria Domain and continued to follow all the tracks over an afternoon. They offer fantastic views of the surrounding Sounds and are pretty quiet. I only bumped into a few other people in about 4 hours of walking. The paths can get a bit slippery after... More

We were on a Holland America ship cruise stopping at Picton Sound. We are now at the top of the Southern NZ Island, about 35 miles below Wellington (which is at the bottom of the northern island). WOW what a difference in topography as this southern island appears to have a lot more hills and mountains). Overcast sky, but no... More

When writing reviews about places in NZ it's difficult to avoid the words beautiful and spectacular when describing the scenery. If you are planning a trip from North to South (or South to North) and are trying to decide between flying and the ferry, be advised that the ferry journey is an experience in its own right, like a mini... Picton has a lot going for it, it's scenic, laid-back and friendly. But when you start driving around this abundant land of Lumber, Dairy, and Cattle you'll also encounter a thriving wine growing region, (Marlborough), Craft Cheese and Hand Made Chocolate shops. The St. Claire Winery is an example. It is an attractive vineyard and winery where you can sample... More

I love this touristy water front town. Great place to begin your tour of the South Island. If you arrive here by ferry make a plan to spend a few nights before continuing on. Great restaurants, fun Mini Golf course, educational Maritime Museum, lots of water activities to chose from and much more. I can recommend the YHA for the... More

This is some of the most scenic land in New Zealand. The approach to Picton is slow because of the many islands but it one place where you just don't want to hurry. The hills and mountains come right down to the waters edge and the trees and bushes are vibrantly green against the blue water.

The ferry from Wellington to Picton brings you in along Picton Sound. The islands and fjords are stunningly beautiful.
