Picton

This is a lovely part of the South Island and the departure point for the ferry to Wellington, the trip is wonderful on a calm day.

I know, the vast majority of NZ is stunning but the Picton Sound is just incredible. Coming through on the ferry from Wellington almost feels like going to another country. The bays, hills and scenery are all beautiful. If you're visiting NZ be sure to take the ferry at least once rather than flying down, it's an amazing experience.

You'll probably hear of Picton as the start (or end) point of the inter-island ferry, but there's more to this place than the ferry terminal. The sound itself is absolutely gorgeous and you definitely need to check it out from one of the hilltops. The water are bright blue and the nearby mountains are covered with trees. Absolutely beautiful.

Spent some time here whilst waiting for our ferry to Wellington & its a lovely place with great views. Plenty of shops & cafes as well as the potential for boat trips & plane flights - well worth making time available if you can once you've landed from Wellington or before you embark to Wellington. Of course the ferry trip... More

The weather was so still and beautiful. Went on some lovely walks around the bay. Friendly locals, good coffee and food. Lots of options right there for travelling and sightseeing.

new zealand has many beautiful places and Picton Sound is such a place. Limited activities but attending for the view alone, no matter what time of year is worth it.

A small town with residents and few souvenir shops. Reach there according to your packaged tour timings. Other than that there is nothing much in the city to see.

This is part of the beautiful group of sounds adjacent to the Cook Strait that runs between the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Beautiful clear water with abundant marine life. Picton Sound is the Gateway to Picton New Zealand. Picton itself is a wonderful little city with everything you would expect in most cities although most of it... More

My husband and I had a few hours to spare before we took the ferry to Wellington. I heard it's a beautiful place. After breakfast we took a nature trail walk to Picton Sound. From the trail we saw a few Fantails chirping around the trees. This was a treat for us, our first time to see and know there... More

We have been to places very similar to Picton Sounds, but here the climate is not too hot or too cold, the town is clean and the bays unspoilt. Marlborough Sound contains a fifth of the New Zealand coastline. Many holiday homes, boats and trampers arrive in summer but there's still a feeling of remoteness.
