Keep an eye out for dolphins, orca, penguins, gannets....even glowing plankton (at night). The best way to experience this area is by water and there are plenty of boat tours available if you do not have your own boat. You could also hike, or hire a kayak or jet-ski. There are hundreds of tiny private bays to explore, with lots... More

I have hiked here a couple of times and if you only do one walk up 'The Snout' it's worth it. The sounds can be explored in so many ways whether on foot or by boat. You could spend a lot of time here, but as most people are on a schedule to get around NZ it really is a... More

This was a true highlight on a glorious summers day. We drove around the bays stopping to take many photos and thoroughly enjoyed every part of this lovely day. Go and enjoy it.

I sailed all around the sounds for two weeks. Amazing !!! Lots of nature, leaping dolphins, sleeping seals, great coves to stop and stay. Great walks through tropical forests. An unforgettable experience. Nothing to dislike unless you hate the sound of cicadas.

Mail cruise. Great commentary. Great fun seeing the locals and their dogs getting their doggie treat.

Spend at least a couple of days around Picton to take in some fabulous Marlborough Sounds tours. There are plenty of options for cruises. And fishing charters as well. You certainly will not be disappointed.

As we did two years ago we travelled both Islands and with a campervan the boat is the only way to get from one to the other. We stayed in Picton carpark, sounds strange, but there are 10 allocated spots for self contained vehicles after 6pm. It is just so handy for the ferry. The trip across these magnificent waters... Sailed into Picton on the Radiance of the Seas, spent a lot of time on deck taking in the very beautiful vista's available. Very nice views all around the ship. Very peaceful and while we were told to look for Dolphins sadly none appeared on our visit. But, it was just so nice and serene on a spectacularly sunny day.... More
