Description: The Giant's House - A historic Akaroa house with original artworks...
The Giant's House - A historic Akaroa house with original artworks, terraced gardens with sculptures and mosaics. Very Unique. A creative feast and a wonderful experience. Romantic secluded and quiet, but only a few minutes walk to the centre of Akaroa. The Giant's House was the first bank managers house in Akaroa, built 1880 of totara and kauri. It is grand in size, proportions, and features. Elegant and comfortable, it is designed and decorated in the french style. Being the home of an artist it balances and contrasts the historic and contemporary. Both the house and terraced gardens are full of surprises -expect the unexpected at The Giant's House!

A friend and I visited the Giants House while spending a few days in Akaroa. It is a fair walk up a hill and as you go into the entry pavilion it is like entering an alternate universe. The garden has been transformed with mosaic clad figures and objects which are a joy to behold yet somewhat disconcerting. It is... More

OMG! Plan to spend a couple hours at least trying to see this dreamland of beautiful artwork! It's a steep climb up the street to get to the actual house, but once there it's well worth the climb. Ceramic sculptures abound in every size, shape, color, creature, you name it! Again, you will need to be pretty sure footed to... More

Be prepared to walk round with your mouth open - this garden is incredible. The combination of all of the artwork, the setting of the art as part of the garden and the garden itself is incredible. The mosaics, the creatures, the paths, the flowers, the fully-laden fruit trees - what a spot! Initially I was a little put off... More

So, it was raining hard since early morning, that day. We got confused if we should go in to this place or not. With a 20$ entrance fee, you'd probably want it to be dry and nice. The rain finally stopped but it's still quite gloomy. We decided to go in afterall. They gave us a pair of umbrellas but... More

We visited The Giant’s House as part of a shore excursion tour of the Banks Peninsula. We were not sure what to expect, but were definitely awed with The Giant’s House. It is indescribable! We were introduced to the artist/owner, Josie Martin, and then left on our own to explore. It is an amazing display of artistry, imagination, and engineering.... More

Made a trip "home" from USA at Xmas time and took family here to see this. There were 6 of us and they all live in CHCH and had never heard of it! Truly an amazing place. It is well worth the admission price. You will not be disappointed. The photos don't do it justice either. I will be back!!

Our visit to Giant's House was part of a cruise ship excursion in Akaroa. We really didn't know very much about the stop prior to our arrival. What a pleasant surprise awaited us at this wonderful, unique property. The entire grounds and house are a expanded canvas for the talented owner artist, Josie Martin. Sculpture, mosaic and other art work... More

We weren't really sure what to expect from this place but were intrigued by an advert we saw for it. It was just bonkers and brilliant. The garden is beautiful even before you add in all the mosaics and sculptures. There are so many bits that feel like secret hideaways and it was really cool to explore. Everywhere I looked... More

The Giant's House is a true visual experience of colours and vibrance for life. The artist has created a wonderfully fun collection of mosaic art pieces based on the human and animal form, all located in her own beautiful garden. Each work of art has its own theme; I particularly loved the elaborate mosaic piano and the boat at the... More

If you have visited Gaudi Park in Barcelona, and liked it, then the Giant's House in Akaroe is a must see. It's Gaudi Park on a much smaller scale. I found Giant's House while walking from the port to Stanley Park, and then walking the neighborhood. What a lucky find. There are many pictures available on the internet.
