Whilst in Akaroa we visited the Pohatu Penguin Colony and what an amazing experience it was! I have to admit the half hour journey in the 4WD over the Caldera of the vulcanology was a bit hair raising but Ben our guide was a very careful driver. It was fascinating seeing the chicks in their burrows and watching the adults... More

They used to be sheep farmers, now they are penguin farmers - caring for this colony of little blue penguins, now the largest one on the New Zealand Mainland. Definately worth a visit!

We stopped in Akaroa on a cruise ship. We had arranged a private tour with Pohatu prior to leaving the states. It was approximately a 7 hour tour and we saw all that we had wanted. Our guide was fabulous and was able to take us to places most don't get to visit. We saw many blue penguins nesting up... More

We spent 2 nights here. Coming from a city, this was definitely an unforgettable experience for me..It was a joy to see a plentiful sheeps of different shapes, sizes and colours. And, they are really so adorable! And, of course, did see some penguins as well, they are indeed very cute! It was a shame that the weather conditions were... More

I bought this tour on-line for our party of four in advance of our visit on 20 November. It cost $90 NZD pp for a four hour nature tour in a 4WD. It ran from about 1200 - 1600, which was perfect timing for us off our cruise ship, Celebrity Solstice. Our driver/guide was Shireen, who is also the owner... More

There were four of us on the tour the day we went. The tour guide (I've forgotten her name) was very friendly and knowledgeable. We stopped along the road to take pictures - the view was amazing. The farm is in such a beautiful and peaceful setting. We fed some lambs, saw several penguins up close in their nesting boxes,... More

We really enjoyed our trip to see the penguins. We were picked up by minibus and taken over the Banks Peninsula to the farm where we were shown the conservation work going on to help the penguins. Included getting to see the penguins in their nest boxes. Recommended.

Our guide was Ben and he was very knowledgeable about the land, the animals and the plants. At Pohatu, you get to see penguins making homes out of manmade nests which is awesome because you know the people at pohatu are doing something right! That evening, we saw 2 yellow-eyed that came real close and many other little blue ones... More

This is a great tour, run very professionally, with proceeds going to support conservation efforts. It gives you the rare opportunity to see penguins, but also to see the sights around the Banks Peninsula. We were picked up in town by the guides, who had a good knowledge of the area and its history. They drove us out through farmland... More

My sister and I booked this tour after reading Trip Advisor. Our guide was the niece of the owner, and gave us lots of interesting information; you could really sense her commitment to the land, to the animals, and to conservation in general. We really enjoyed seeing the baby penguins in their boxes, but also feeding the lambs and also... More
