We arrived in Akaroa for a day as part of a 14 day cruise. My husband was ready to try something other than the expensive and overcrowded cruise options for shore excursions and found Captain Ray and his fabulous boat the "Manutara" through an internet search. What a gift! We spent an afternoon with the captain and another couple, motoring... More

Thanks Ray for sharing your beautiful yacht & for all the tall tales! We didn't see much of the promised wildlife, but your yacht is "awesome"

We turned up at Akaroa harbour hoping to go on a sailing cruise and asked the captain - Ray - if he had room for two. He said he had no passengers for the morning cruise but to our surprise said he would take us out. It was like having our own charter. Ray was charming and informative. We got... More

We love sailing- and try to do a trip whenever we are on vacation on a lake or at the ocean. Most of the time you sail less than 1/4 of the time- and do very little real sailing. Captain Ray is a great sailor, knows the boat and bay very well, and is most considerate, friendly and informative- and... More

Akaroa Sailing Cruises is a super fun trip. We just returned from Akaroa and the highlight was a sailing with "Akaroa Sailing Cruises" we saw quite a few Hector's dolphins. Hector’s dolphins are the smallest and rarest marine dolphins in the world. They have distinct black facial markings, short stocky bodies and a dorsal fin shaped like a Mickey Mouse... More

I was only in Akaroa for a night, but very pleased that I chose to experience the 3 hour cruise with Ray. It you are limited on time or resources, the time shared on the water with Ray will expose you to many things. You get New Zealand history, folklore, dolphin sightings, and best of all was the personal interaction... More

We stayed in Akaroa for four days and did the Black Cat (which was OK) Close to the Coast (which was really good) and sailed with Ray which was fantastic. As stated by others there was no overcrowding (only 9 of us and he will take out as few as 4 on a quiet day) Ray himself is a very... More

Went sailing with Ray this afternoon and Linda and I had the yacht, which can accommodate 20, to ourselves. On the water for nearly three hours and saw Hector Dolphins and Blue Penguins in beautiful surroundings. Both of us had a long stint at the helm. Ray was a mine of information about Akaroa, sailing, New Zealand and wildlife, all... More

Anyone visiting the Canterbury region of New Zealand must include Akaroa in the Banks Peninsula & anyone visiting Akaroa must include a sail on Ray's delightful yacht, the Manutara. It is a classic & graceful design that totally suits the sublime ecosystem of the Akaroa inlet & there is not a question to be put to Ray that goes unanswered.... More

We were fortunate to be in Akaroa on one of the days when there were no large cruise ships in harbor, and by luck we had Captain Ray's sailboat -- a beautiful wooden cruiser with classic lines, built to a 1946 design -- to ourselves. Ray was charming and informative, and my wife and I, who sail in Maine in... More
