We met Ray at the end of the pier, right where our cruise ship tender dropped us off. The next 2 1/2 hours were absolutely glorious! Ray is very personable and only takes a small group. We each had a turn at the wheel and experienced real sailing in the middle of a beautiful harbor surrounded by cliffs and wildlife.... More

We were lucky choosing to spend two hours sailing around Akaroa Harbor with Ray. A real sailor with an inspiring knowledge of the local ecology and history. An entertaining story teller with an intelligently witty sense of humor. Rugged coastal cliffs and caves, sea-birds, blue penguins schools of fish and then the ultimate natural encounter with the Hectors dolphins torpedoing... More

This is an opportunity to take the helm of a beautiful sailing boat with the guidance of Captain Ray, and to see the wonderful harbor and wildlife. The captain went out of his way, taking more time than scheduled, in order to locate wildlife for the passengers to see. It was a great experience.

Great sailer, great boat, wonderful knowledge of local water, wildlife, history. Ray is a native Kiwi with world class sailing skills. On this trip you will see Dolphins (very rare Hectors dolphins), possibly the most elusive of penguins, the blue penguin, lots of birds including Antarctic terns. Whales are not unknown in these water. Ray will let you sail the... More

Ray Shoebridge is the perfect person to spend time with in Akaroa. Our tender was going to be late due to rough waters but Ray waited until we all arrived. Then off we went for a delightful couple hours of sailing. When we were done we ate at Murphys at his suggestion and still had ample time to see the... More

The other day we went sailing with Ray on his beautiful ship. Started out very warm and with little wind. We just cruised and looked out for dolphins, which was exciting. Suddenly the wind turned southern and it became cold. But it gave us some great sailing! Ray is very enthusiastic and inviting for both sailors and non-sailors. This trip... More

On October 21st this year we spent a day in Akaroa and were delighted to find a very reasonable offer of a wildlife cruise on a smart and extremely beautiful classic vintage sailing boat. The captain, Ray, is a super friendly enthusiastic person, a dedicated sailor, who can tell you everything from funny local stories to interesting historical stuff and... More

Definitely worth it.. Fun, informative and 100% safe.. Ray was really friendly too and that made all the difference. He literally welcomed us on board at the last moment. He gave all his passengers a turn at steering the vessel which was awesome. Highly recommended!
